OBJECTIVES:  The Department of Energy National Nuclear Security
Administration Stewardship Science Graduate Fellowship (SSGF) Program
provides outstanding benefits and opportunities to students pursuing a
Ph.D. in areas of interest to stewardship science, such as high-energy
density physics, low-energy nuclear science, or properties of
materials under extreme conditions.  Fellows also participate in
research at a DOE laboratory.

ELIGIBILITY
  This program is open only to U.S. citizens and permanent resident
aliens studying at a U.S. university who are exceptional senior
undergraduates or are in their first or second year of graduate
study.

FUNDING
  This program provides: a yearly stipend of $36,000; full tuition
and required fees paid during the appointment period (at any
accredited U.S. university); an annual $1,000 academic allowance to be
used for research or professional development expenses; payment of
travel costs related to the annual fellowship conference, laboratory
visits and other conferences; augmentation of the stipend during the
12-week research practicum at a DOE laboratory; and the potential to
renew the fellowship for up to four years. (msw)
