*Jim Kuo, Ph.D.* is an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the
California State University, Los Angeles. His research interests include
aerodynamics, optimization, renewable energy, and instructional
innovations. Dr. Kuo’s presentation will discuss tips to prevent
cheating/plagiarism during online tests.

*Jean-Michel Maarek, Dr. Eng.* is Professor of Engineering Practice and
Director of Undergraduate Affairs in the Department of Biomedical
Engineering at the University of Southern California. Jean-Michel teaches
Senior Design and Biomedical Electronics. His interests in engineering
education revolve around active learning, flipped learning, laboratory
instruction, and assessment. Jean-Michel serves currently as Chair-Elect of
ASEE-PSW. Dr. Maarek’s presentation will discuss assessment techniques for
design capstone courses.

*Daniel Whisler, Ph.D.* is an Assistant Professor in Mechanical and
Aerospace Engineering with experience leading student research projects,
advising, and facilitating the move to alternative mode of instruction at
CSU Long Beach. Dr. Whisler’s presentation will discuss his experience with
workflow optimizations for teaching and assessments.

We hope you can join us!

*Upcoming ASEE PSW Webinars*

*Thursday December 3 (3-4 pm PST): An open discussion about mental health
in the classroom: helping our students through COVID-19.*

Facilitator: Andrew Danowitz . Associate Professor of Electrical
Engineering, California Polytechnic State University

This session is designed to be an open discussion between audience members
and facilitator. We’ll be talking about student mental health during the
Covid pandemic, what faculty can do to identify and assist students in
distress, and strategies for faculty to protect their own mental health
during this time.

*Thursday December 10 (3-4 pm PST): **Adapting to Change: Transitioning an
In-person Engineering Research Program to a Hybrid Model Due to the
COVID-19 Pandemic*

Presenters: Jean Larson, Ph.D. and Kimberly Farnsworth, M.Ed., Arizona
State University

In this presentation, we will report on our center’s effort to adapt a
traditionally in person model of engineering research experience to a
hybrid environment. The Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) program at
CBBG has historically been a five-week summer program at Arizona State
University and Georgia Institute of Technology. K-14 teachers from local
schools participate in lab research with engineering faculty and graduate
students as mentors and develop engaging lesson plans based on the research
to be implemented back in their classrooms. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic,
our 2020 program was adapted to allow for a high level of engagement in a
remote, virtual environment, in addition to alternative lab experiences for
the participants. We will share: (1) the planning strategies and outcomes
we used to guide content development; (2) the different components which
comprised the program (synchronous, asynchronous, in person); and (3) best
practices and lessons learned from implementation.
