Engineering Faculty,
I send a few emails about the plans to improve student advising in the
college and university’s investment on a software platform called EAB
Navigate. Student advising is an area we identified with potential to
help us improve undergraduate instruction. Our peer advising center is
doing a great job however is not a replacement for faculty advising. As
you all know, we do not have staff dedicated to advising in our college and
this responsibility is distributed between department chairs and faculty.
The university invested in a software platform called EAB Navigate as
advising management software. If we can properly use this software, we
can transition from reactive advising (student seeks advice) to proactive
advising ( we can detect students who needs advice before they drop out)
and improve our advising process. Improving advising is critical for our
college at a time we are tasked with closing achievement gaps and improve
our programs. I can not emphasize how important faculty participation is
and how much we need your support.
Provost’s office scheduled an advising forum on November 20, 2020 from
8:00 AM to 11:00 AM to discuss student advising and use cases where and
how we can use EAB to help our students and reach them out when they need
us. Here I am pleading one more time to ask you join this forum and help
us reshape the advising process in the college. Our Assistant Dean
Theresa Garcia will lead a session during the forum to help us navigate
through the software. Currently we only have 4 faculty members
(including myself) signed up for the advising forum. Please take a moment
to review this request and make an effort to participate (even if for part
of the meeting) and provide input to help the college move forward.
