Hello College of Engineering faculty, I hope this email finds you well.
I wanted to take the opportunity to let you know about an exciting
opportunity for our college, and our first-generation, low-income, and
underrepresented students. I'm also writing to ask for your support.
As you may know, for nearly 20 years, SDSU used to house the Ronald E.
McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program, which provides academic
support, research experience, and summer stipends to 25 First-Generation,
Low-Income, and also URM students, but the funding was lost 5 years ago.
We are now eligible to re-apply for the program. The grant announcement
came out about 3 weeks ago (and is due April 7th) and we recently won,
through an internal white paper competition, the right to apply on behalf
of SDSU.
I am a member of the team working with Dr. Emilio Ulloa from the College of
Sciences to prepare the application. We have broad support from Associate
Dean Atkins, Dean Maloy, AVP Norah Schultz, the College of Sciences, the
College of Engineering, the College of Education, SDS Student Support
Services (TRiO), the Division of Undergraduate Studies, the Math and
Writing Centers, Career Services, and EOP.
I'd like to ask for your support for the McNair program. I'm hoping you'll
send us a short but strong letter of support.
As part of the scoring criteria, the department of Education needs to see
evidence of institutional commitment for the McNair program from faculty.
The CoS is committed to providing in-kind time, and office space and
resources to the program and we think that your commitment to devote your
time to mentoring students from our program (and perhaps your willingness
to serve on our advisory board) will help us demonstrate an even stronger
institutional commitment. I hope we have your support as we believe it is
critical to the success of the application. I've attached a letter of
support template and and a short summary of the program for your
reference. If you are willing to provide a letter of support, feel free to
make any changes to the letter as you see fit.
Since the application is due April 7th it would be ideal to receive your
letter (electronically is fine) by March 27th. I apologize for the short
turn-around on this request. I hope it doesn't sway your ability to support
our application.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, or let me
know if you'd like to meet.
I am looking forward to the collaboration
