Hi Monte,

It is an open secret that even though the lottery money is strictly meant
for teaching purposes, most equipment are used for the dual purpose of
teaching and research. While most reasonable people would find nothing
wrong with that, what has been painful to watch over the years is the
misuse of state fund due to lack of accountability. Even a cursory look at
the list you sent out will show only couple of names (Meti and Greg)
associated with all the equipment. But there is a good chance that some of
these equipment may have been used for the dual purpose I mentioned. I have
been advocating for a long time that we associate a faculty name with each
piece of state funded equipment. This has some obvious benefit (holding
someone responsible for the upkeep of the equipment, a college wide
inventory of top-of-the line equipment as a bragging right) and very
little downside. The lack of transparency creates an impression that maybe
some people or department are receiving bigger portion of the fund than
they deserve. And this is not without basis; as you know very well,
decisions were made quite arbitrarily at Darryl's office.

I am writing this open letter so that a discussion is started and you can
get input from other faculty to see if they consider this an important
enough issue for you to come up with a lasting solution to this problem.

Thanks,

Sooby
