To College Staff,
Per Sally Rouch's email below, Dr. German has authorized College Staff to
close offices and leave the building after noon today.
It is important that, before you leave, you comply with the directions
below. You should:
1. Post a sign on your department door with the dept. phone number and
a statement that messages will be returned today.
2. Put a message on the department voice mail saying that calls will
be returned promptly.
3. Check your messages hourly, remotely, this afternoon. To do so,
dial 594-7444. Press # at the menu to say that you have a phone on the
system, and follow the usual commands to retrieve your voice messages.
Mailbox number is your extension number.
4. Return messages left on your department phone today.
5. You will be paid for this afternoon. This is a reasonable request.
Thanks,
Cindi

There is good news this morning. The broken pipe has been replaced. We
anticipate being able to start refilling the lines this afternoon, and the
system will be fully operational and delivering chilled water to all
buildings on the system by tomorrow afternoon. Restoration of the paving on
Centennial Mall will continue through next week.
However, we continue to struggle with the heat build-up, especially in
buildings without operable windows. Therefore, as we did yesterday,
following direction from their vice presidents, supervisors may decide if
employees can leave at noon. If an office is unstaffed, a message must be
posted on the door providing a phone number to call for assistance, and
arrangements must be made for follow up to the phone calls. Employees who
are assigned to stay due to the requirement to provide essential services
will be paid in accordance with the emergency pay provisions of the
applicable collective bargaining agreement.
Even though some offices may be closed, the campus is open, and every effort
should be made to ensure services for students or to provide a phone number
students can call for assistance.
A few have asked me what conditions will be like inside Viejas Arena for
tomorrow's 10 a.m. New Student and Family Convocation. While air
conditioning will not have been restored, we anticipate it will not be
uncomfortably warm - due to the early start time and a big cool-down
forecast for tonight and the weekend. We will circulate the cool outside
air through the arena tonight and continue into tomorrow morning.
I know this has been a trying period, and I am grateful for the generally
good spirits and the patience all have shown as we have worked to complete
these major repairs.
