We have received recent reports of individuals impersonating members of the
university community using variations of SDSU faculty and staff personal
and work email addresses.

Frequent targets include those who report to executives or work in
financial or human resource departments whose information is readily
available online.

In light of these reports, we would like to remind members of the SDSU
community of the following:

   - Be suspicious of emails with urgent requests from executives

   - Review the sending email address carefully to determine if it is an
   official SDSU address, i.e. janedoe at sdsu.edu
   <https://it.sdsu.edu/security/protect/phishing.aspx>

   - Verify with the apparent sender either by phone or in-person; do not
   reply to the request itself

   - Be particularly careful with domains that seem similar, but are not
   from sdsu.edu <https://it.sdsu.edu/security/protect/phishing.aspx>, i.e.
   janedoe at sdsu.formsite.com
   <https://it.sdsu.edu/security/protect/phishing.aspx> or janedoe at sdsuu.edu
   <https://it.sdsu.edu/security/protect/phishing.aspx>

   - Ignore any request for payment via gift card

   - Verify unusual requests for money with your supervisor or leadership
   before acting

Report any suspicious emails or fraudulent accounts by forwarding them to
fraud at sdsu.edu
