Debra Bertram
Database and Survey Analyst, College of Business Administration

I have been an active staff member of the campus community for the past 18
years. I have seen the voice of staff raise from a whisper to an
important viewpoint in many aspects of University governance. It is both a
great privilege and responsibility for staff to be present in these
decisions.

Currently I serve on both the Learning Analytics and Celebrating Aztec
Faculty and Staff Presidential working groups.

During my tenure as Chair of the Staff Honors and Awards Committee, I
worked with President Hirshman’s office and the University Senate to raise
the importance of the Presidential Staff Excellence Awards from an
afterthought to a stand-alone exclusive event, with the awardees announced
at convocation as the complementary award to the Monty’s, now called the
‘Zumas’. These staff awards are also included in the Senate Policy file.

I would be honored to be the voice of staff as senator.

Jason Tan
Peer Coordinator and Academic Advisor, College of Business Administration

I am very interested in serving on the Senate for upcoming academic year
because I feel I would be a great contributor to the policies that are
established for the university, as well as with the consideration of new
policies. I am a staff member who frequently works with students, and I
believe that gives me a unique perspective as to what affects them in terms
of their studies as well as their overall campus life.

I have a great interest in learning and experiencing more of the inner
workings of SDSU. This opportunity would allow me to become more involved
with the university through participation in Senate as well as other
committees. Being selected would not only would it be a great experience
but it will give me a chance to give back to the university that has given
so much to me.

Jessica Savalla
Media and Communications Officer, Library and Information Access

I have worked at SDSU for more than 10 years, and my interests and
expertise align with the duties of the Senate. Work areas included the
University Honors Program, the College of Business Administration, the
Division of Undergraduate Studies, and now Library and Information Access.
Previously, I was a public information officer for KPBS TV/FM as well as
for the City of San Diego. In addition, I have been an advisor for many
student organizations including: Mortar Board Senior Honor Society, Phi Eta
Sigma Freshman Honor Society, and the Associated Business Student Council.
Further, I serve as an academic advisor for Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity
and the SDSU Coast Guard Auxiliary. Recently, I helped write and edit the
WASC Institutional Report, as well as coordinate the site visit. My varied
experience with campus initiatives, diversity projects, and high impact
practices would offer a unique voice to Senate discussions and decisions.

Rachael Stewart
Administrative Support Coordinator, College of Education / Educational
Leadership

I am interested in joining the SDSU Senate as a Staff Representative as I
strongly believe in the practice of university shared governance,
particularly where staff is concerned. For the last 7 years I have served
in educational administrative positions in the areas of training,
recruitment, marketing, and coordinating; all which enabled me to
collaborate and oversee other staff members. These experiences have allowed
me to gain a deeper understanding on the important roles staff members have
towards an educational institution’s functions and business. I hope to
apply my experiences and would be eager to be in a position that would
allow me to receive input from my colleagues on how we can help them in
their service goals for the benefit of the general welfare of the
university.

Donovan Geiger
Student Affairs Officer, College of Engineering / Dean's Office

Donovan Geiger has served as the Student Affairs Coordinator in the College
of Engineering for the last 10 years and is a proud alumnus of SDSU. In
that time he has been a tireless advocate for student success, staff
engagement, international education, and community service. At SDSU,
Donovan has served as the Chair of the Staff Affairs Committee, a member of
the International Programs Council, advisor to three student organizations,
and is a Staff Excellence Award recipient. In the community, he has been a
military officer, elected local town council member, and Chair of the City
of San Diego's International Affairs Board. His depth and breadth of
experience both at SDSU and in the community will provide our staff a
dedicated representative in the SDSU Senate.

Cyndi Chie
Analyst and Programmer, Enrollment Services

During my 29+ years at SDSU I have represented staff in numerous ways,
including but not limited to serving on: Senate Staff Affairs Committee
SDSU Labor/Management Committee Enhancing Campus Community and
Communication for People with Varying Abilities Presidential Task Force
Accessible Technology Initiative Employees ADA Advisory Committee

I believe in shared governance. I feel it is important that staff be heard,
not only to ensure that our concerns are addressed, but to contribute our
expertise to the benefit of the University. I often serve on committees as
the only voice for staff, helping to shape the decisions made. It has
always been my goal to gain respect for staff. To that end I was part of
the subcommittee that established the Presidential Excellence Awards (the
Zumas) to recognize and reward staff achievements.
I would be honored to continue my service as your staff senator.

Todd Kennedy
Veterans Coordinator, Enrollment Services

I came to San Diego State University in fall 2011 following a 22 year
career in the United States Marine Corps to begin pursuing my undergraduate
degree in History. Since then, I have been selected to a number of academic
honor societies, served as the president of the Student Veteran
Organization, and will be completing my studies in spring 2016. Hired by
SDSU in October 2012 as a full-time state employee, I serve as the Veterans
Coordinator where I oversee the daily operation of the Barron Veterans
Center. This resource center – a model for the nation – supports the
personal, professional, and academic success of more than 3,500 military
students each semester comprising more than 10% of the overall student
body. Humbly serving as a member of the University Senate, I hope to
continue advocating for the military students while expanding my influence
to the general student body at large.

Norma Aguilar
Student Recruiter, Imperial Valley Campus

It has been enlightening and an honor to serve as a Staff Senator for
SDSU-IV. I believe I contribute well to the Senate discussions and actions
and hope to be able to serve once more.

Lisa Thurn
Instructional Support, College of Sciences / Biology

I would like to serve another three years as a staff senator. As senator, I
made an effort to represent all staff here on campus mainly by
disseminating and sharing information from the Senate. As chair of Staff
Affairs, I made an effort to include and foster staff participation across
the campus. I personally have served on several committees, Environment and
Safety and Undergraduate Research. Through my participation with the
Undergraduate Research, I became involved in the Student Research
Symposium. Staff is very fortunate to be included in shared-governance here
at SDSU in the University Senate, not all faculty senates include staff at
universities.

Jackie Jones
Administrative Coordinator, College of Sciences / Psychology

Greetings! I am a San Diego State alumna (’82). I have a Bachelor’s and a
Master’s Degree in English (SFSU ’92) and have worked on campus on and off
for a total of 12 years (11 in the Senate office and now in Psychology). I
also served on the Staff Affairs committee. There are many issues that are
important to the staff here on campus: compensation, improving staff
inclusion in shared governance, public transportation discounts (there are
none now), to name just a few. I’d be very eager to hear your issues. SDSU
has changed so much over the years, much like my hair. You deserve a
dedicated Senator with great institutional memory, zeal, and humor to fight
on your behalf. I would be honored to be that Staff Senator.

Jesica Brubaker
Resource Sharing Specialist, Library

My name is Jesica Brubaker; I work in the Library as a Resource Sharing
Specialist. I have been working at SDSU for about 16 years. I would like
to nominate myself for the open SDSU / SD campus senate seat. I have a lot
of experience, not only as staff, but I also was a student at SDSU,
graduating with an MFA. I am always looking to be more involved at SDSU,
and being a senator would help satisfy that goal. Thank you for your
consideration.

Quincey Penn
EOP Outreach Coordinator, Student Affairs / EOP and Ethnic Affairs

I would love to be a staff representative in the University Senate. I
bring leadership and practicality along with over seven years of experience
in Student Affairs at the collegiate level. Obtaining a Bachelors degree
in Psychology and Sociology, along with my Mater's in Counseling paired
with my experience makes me the ideal candidate. Having went to Fresno
State for my under grad and graduate work, I bring the prospective of a
different University to the panel. I see this as a great opportunity to
meet other faculty and staff and come up with ways to collaborate as we all
strive making this campus a better place.

Stephanie Smith
College of Business Administration, Resource Manager

I would be pleased to serve as a representative on the Senate Staff
Committee. In my position with the College of Business Administration, I
have had the opportunity to create processes and procedures, as well as
developing and implementing new technology, to support and manage the
Graduate Fee Grant Program since its inception in 2010. As a result of
combining both my own initiative and innovative thinking, along with a
clear understanding of both CSU and campus policy, I received the CBA
Dean’s Staff Excellence Award, in the Innovation category, in 2012 .
I have also had the tremendous opportunity to take on additional
responsibilities outside of my normal role. These opportunities have
recently included serving as the staff lead on the Page Pavilion renovation
project; affording me the ability to establish new and strengthen existing
relationships with colleagues from various departments and centers across
campus to include Facilities Services, Facilities Planning and University
Relations and Development. Due to my commitment to the project and the
college, in 2014, I received the CBA Dean's Staff Excellence Award for
Service to the College.

The opportunity to serve on this committee would allow me to apply my
skills and experience towards the betterment of both the college as well as
the university as a whole.

Jose Preciado
Director/Service Learning and Community Engagement, Undergraduate Studies

I have served as a student services professional for 18 years in both
Student Affairs and Academic Affairs. I started as a school relations
officer supporting student outreach initiatives for the Educational
Opportunity Program. I now support student success initiatives in the
Division of Undergraduate Studies. I have served in various roles as a
staff representative including as chair of the Staff Affairs Committee. I
have also served as a staff representative on the University Senate, the
Committee on Academic Resources and Planning, the Committee on Diversity,
Equity and Outreach, the Campus Fee Advisory Committee, the Staff Awards
Committee and the President’s Staff Excellence Awards Committee. I also
volunteer my time with my union and serve as a steward for Unit 4
employees. Over the years, I have been an advocate for staff's fair share
of resources to support new hiring, to increase staff representation on
campus committees and staff safety (watch out for those skateboards).

Kari Szakal
Executive Assistant to the Associate Vice-President, University Relations
and Development

My experience working for four different divisions on campus, in addition
to the Research Foundation, gives me a well-rounded understanding of
faculty, staff, and student needs. I am passionate about student success
and knowledgeable about the strategic plan. I am a former Aztec (I hold a
MA in Women's Studies from San Diego State University) and am also involved
in the Aztec Mentor Program and the Young Alumni Club. I am well-versed in
the structure of formal university meetings and currently sit on the
University of Michigan, San Diego Club Board of Governors

Divisions/Programs I have worked for: College of Sciences and College of
Arts and Letters, MARC/LSAMP programs and the Women's Studies Department
Business and Financial Affairs, Facilities Services, Work Control Center
Graduate and Research Affairs, Office of the Associate Dean and Vice
President/Dean University Relations and Development, Office of the
Associate Vice President Research Foundation, College of Sciences, IMSD
Program

Reminder: vote for or write-in no more than three candidates.
