Epsilon goes to Harvard
On May 3rd and 4th 28 of the most innovative student start-ups flew to compete at the Business Model Competition at Harvard University. The international competition was based on how start-ups develop a customer-centric business model. Zahn Center company Epsilon Micro Devices received fifth place and won $2,000. Epsilon is a biotech start-up in Lab-on-a-Chip technologies. Within the last six months, Epsilon has developed seven prototypes, four products, and generated more than $10,000 in revenue. They are now selling on three continents and have championed a solid business model.

Entrepreneurship blooms at SDSU
Entrepreneurship is not only for business student anymore. Students across SDSU embrace an entrepreneurial lifestyle. The growing start-up community has led SDSU and the Lavin Entrepreneurship Center to develop an Entrepreneurship Minor. The new minor is open to all majors and will start on Fall 2013. Students enrolling want to learn how to solve problems in the marketplace, think innovatively, and assess trends and new opportunities. These tools will help students start their own companies and solve problem in their jobs after college.

Surf’s Up
What says more SoCal than surfing? David Elliot, the latest Zahn Center PitchFest winner, developed a new surfboard fin with a universal attachment. The new design will allow surfers to use a more appropriate fin to match their surfing style. Once David enters the Zahn Center, he plans to use their new 3D printer to take his design to the next level.

PathGeo and Qualcomm X-Prize Accepted to Springboard program
PathGeo and Qualcomm X-Prize have been accepted into Connect Springboard program. Connect helps young companies prove their business plan and develop a sound commercialization strategy. PathGeo is a web-mapping and social media analytics company. On May 6th PathGeo began alpha testing of its MapTime social media, customer and demographics mapping platform. Qualcomm X-Prize is a company that is competing in the Qualcomm Tricorder XPrize for $10 million. For the competition they have to create a wireless device that monitors and diagnoses your health conditions. Their prototype is due April 2014.

REACH wins at Design Day
Guest from the San Diego Start-up community came to Design Day to discover the latest developments with the Zahn Center companies and College of Engineering capstone projects. Each Zahn company displayed their latest prototype. REACH, a start-up developing a prosthetic hand, won for best demo and was awarded a cash prize.

Niche: Congratulations to Niche and Niche’s founder, Ethan Frame, for being accepted to the Zahn Center. Niche is creating a GPS based picture app.

PitchFest: Join us at the Zahn Center PitchFest Friday May 31 at 5pm in the Zahn Center.
