OBJECTIVES: Grants-in-aid are awarded to support scientific
investigation in all disciplines of science and engineering, including
the social sciences.
ELIGIBILITY
Eligible applicants are undergraduate and graduate students in
degree programs. While membership in the sponsor's organization is
not a requirement for the program as a whole, the majority of the
funds (seventy-five percent) are designated for use by individuals
whose primary advisors are Sigma Xi members or who are Sigma Xi
student members themselves. Applicants are eligible to receive a
total of two Grants-in-Aid of Research from the sponsor's headquarters
in their lifetime. There are no citizenship restrictions.
International students and non-U.S. citizens are encouraged to
apply.
FUNDING
Grant amounts range from $100 to $1,000 (with an average award of
$600) except for astronomy and eye or vision related research.
Astronomy Grants are awarded up to a maximum of $5,000. Vision
Related Research Grants are awarded up to a maximum of $2,500.
Research awards are made to support scientific investigation in any
field. Grants may be applied to the following: purchase of specific
equipment necessary to undertake the proposed research project; travel
to and from a research site; and reimbursement for human subjects
(only for psychological studies). The program does not fund travel to
meetings or symposia. (klc)
