Subject: Spring 2023 GSHIP Opt-Out Window Now Open
To: <tgaroma at sdsu.edu>
Dear Colleagues,
As a follow-up to our Oct. 24 email
<http://click.comms.sdsu.edu/?qs=aef81ce062a19ae09553b9f58465f2fd30ed6a0554c22cc37f7a8d41f4d0d1bac9f3c2758e2a49f62aafb03ab82102cab880cbd6bdd5e3af>,
we are sending a reminder that the period for students to opt-out of the
Graduate Student Health Insurance (GSHIP) program for the spring term
remains open. This opt-out window is open until *Jan. 31, 2023*.
In your important roles supporting our students, we are writing to ensure
you have ample information about the program as well as resources to share
with any students who express a request for support.
The full message we are sending to students about GSHIP is included below.
*Key Reminders About GSHIP as You Work With Students:*
There are a few important pieces of information that we want to remind you
of, as you do your critical work of supporting our graduate students.
- GSHIP is an opt-out program that offers health insurance coverage
through Anthem Student Advantage. Students who choose not to participate in
the program for Spring 2023, because they have coverage from another
source, *must* opt-out before *Jan. 31, 2023*.
- The GSHIP requirement applies to domestic, non-international students.
International students have their own requirements through the
International Student Center. This requirement also does not apply to fully
online programs. If sending messaging about GSHIP to students in your
program, please note these two exceptions to reduce confusion.
- As a reminder, following the pause of the GSHIP requirement to allow
space for additional student feedback before fully reimplementing the
program, beginning in spring 2023, the university will resume the GSHIP
requirement. The requirement stipulates that all non-international,
domestic graduate students have healthcare coverage.
- Opting out is quick and easy: students just need to complete a waiver
showing proof of alternate healthcare coverage in the JCB insurance portal.
- As you remind students of the GSHIP requirement, it’s important to
emphasize that the action they need to take at this time is to assess their
healthcare coverage options for meeting the requirement. Those options may
include opting out of the Anthem Student Advantage plan, enrolling in a
Covered California or Medi-Cal plan, consulting with university resources,
or taking no action and proceeding with enrollment in the Anthem plan.
*Important GSHIP Dates*
- Students must opt-out no later than *Jan. 31, 2023*.
- If a student chooses to enroll in the Anthem plan or does not take any
action, they will be enrolled in the Anthem Student Advantage plan

which will provide them with medical, dental, and vision insurance for the
Spring. A “pass-through” charge of $1,635 will appear in their my.SDSU
Financial Account Tile

on *Jan. 5, 2023* for the cost of the Spring 2023 premium.
- Students may still opt out after Jan. 5. Though the charge for the
cost of the Anthem Student Advantage insurance premium will appear on their
my.SDSU Financial Account Tile on Jan. 5, 2023, it will be removed if the
student completes the opt-out process and the student receives confirmation
that they have successfully opted out prior to Jan. 31. For those that
choose to enroll in the Anthem Student Advantage plan, the payment will be
due on *Feb. 20, 2022*.
*Assistance is Available*
