Colleagues,

I hope the first week of classes is treating you well! There have been many
changes over the last year within the Division of Research & Innovation.
While I have worked with many of you previously, I wanted to let you know
that my role within DRI has changed, I am now the Director of Research
Initiatives for Engineering & Physical Sciences. In this capacity, I am
here to specifically support faculty from the Colleges of Engineering &
Sciences in their grant getting efforts.

Further, DRI has made strategic investments to support new service
offerings that we hope will increase the competitiveness of our proposals.
These include new proposal review services, non-technical grant writing,
and graphic design support. An overview of all our services is attached.

As you might be aware, a goal of the Strategic Plan is to increase
participation in Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI) / Minority
Institutions (MI) funding opportunities. I am especially interested in
supporting individual and collaborative responses to these opportunities
because our faculty tend to be particularly competitive. So, I might be
reaching out from time to time to highlight these opportunities, two timely
examples can be found below. While these are Department of Defense focused,
there are numerous HSI/MI opportunities from NASA, NSF, USDA, etc. At your
request, I will certainly remove you from further email communications on
these funding opportunities without question or bias.

1) Navy HBCU / MI Program - Aims to increase the quantity and quality of
minority professionals in STEM in the defense community and enhance the
research and educational capabilities of HBCU/MIs in disciplines critical
to the defense mission. Concept paper deadline: Sept. 8th.

2) Army HBCU / MI Program - Aims to enhance research and engineering
capabilities in areas important to national defense and increase the number
of graduates in STEM disciplines. Open competition until 2024, please
contact the Program Officer if interested.

On a similar note, the SDSU Military and Veterans Program (MVP) is eager to
help advance research projects that enhance our military-affiliated
students’ engagement on campus. The MVP’s grant writer, Liz Reep (cc'd), is
available to support these efforts, Liz's overview is also attached.

I very much look forward to working with you on your pursuit of
extramural research funding. Please feel free to reach out if you would
like to leverage any of the services DRI offers or if you have any
questions, thank you!

Cheers
JM
