ABSTRACT:

Lung development is a highly stereotyped process that is regulated by
molecular factors. Ligands such as fibroblast growth factor 10 (Fgf10) play
critical roles in lung development. Fgf10 controls the development of the
branching epithelial structures that form the future airways. Mice that do
not express Fgf10 exhibit severe lung abnormalities. The pattern of Fgf10
expression increases in complexity during development. Disruption of the
spatiotemporal expression of Fgf10 causes lung abnormalities. Understanding
the temporal and spatial regulation of Fgf10 expression is challenging
because of the complex nature of lung development. Mathematical modeling is
a powerful tool for unraveling the dynamics of Fgf10 expression. In this
talk, I will present the new mathematical models we have developed to study
Fgf10 expression pattern. I will also present new findings from the model
simulations that for the first time identifies lung size as a regulator of
the complexity of Fgf10 patterning.
