Subject: [psw_sec] ASEE PSW Fall Series: Creating an Interactive and
Engaging Classroom in the Virtual Classroom - Thursday 10/15 at 3pm
To: <psw_sec at asee.org>
Dear all,
I'm pleased to announce the next few events in our ASEE PSW Fall
Series, including a discussion this Thursday. These events are intended to
share experiences and build an engineering education community in the PSW.
Realizing that everyone is balancing a lot, we are hoping these sessions
will be places to pick up useful tips and share challenges with other
engineering educators. All are welcome. You do not need to be a member of
the ASEE PSW section to attend.
*Creating an Interactive and Engaging Classroom in the Virtual Classroom *
*Thursday October 15th, 3-4 pm PDT *
Both students and instructors have noted a decline in community building
and interaction in the shift to virtual instruction. We will provide some
proven tools and methods for increasing engagement in the online
environment and how to plan interactive learning experiences in both
synchronous and asynchronous courses. We will then lead a discussion so
that participants can share what has worked (or maybe not worked) for
them. *Please
register for this meeting using the following

*. *After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing
information about joining the meeting.
*Speaker Bios*
*Brian Self *earned his Ph.D. in Bioengineering from the University of Utah
and is currently a Professor at California Polytechnic State University in
San Luis Obispo. He has done two professor exchanges in Germany, has given
teacher workshops nationally and internationally, and is a Fellow of the
American Society for Engineering Education. Dr. Self is a co-author of the
Beer and Johnston dynamics textbooks and has performed related engineering
education research in the areas of model eliciting activities,
inquiry-based learning, and conceptual growth. He has taught a variety of
courses, including dynamics, design, engineering applications in aerospace
physiology, experimental methods, and rehabilitation engineering.
*Lauren Cooper* earned her Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering with a research
emphasis in Engineering Education from University of Colorado Boulder. She
is currently an Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering at California
Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. Her research interests
include engineering education and energy efficiency. Dr. Cooper teaches a
variety of design courses in mechanical engineering, including machine
design, philosophy of design, and rehabilitation engineering.
Upcoming Discussion Series
*Dialogue on Senior Design during COVID-19 - **Thursday October 29 (3 - 4
pm PDT)**: *Trying to figure out how to manage your senior design (or other
team-based design course) during online or hybrid teaching? Join other
faculty who are also in the process of rethinking their team-based design
courses in a discussion. Potential topics include modifying projects, team
development, conflict management, and meeting necessary ABET objectives in
an online or hybrid setting, and other related topics of interest to
participants.
*Warm regards,*
*Colleen*
