ABSTRACT:
Cancer is a disease rooted in genetic mutations that allow tumor cells to
avoid normal cell death, divide uncontrollably and modify their
microenvironment to avoid being targeted by natural immune system. Sadly,
there is vast heterogeneity in the genetic and epigenetic factors driving
this cancerous behavior across cancer types, cancer patients and even cells
within the same tumor making targeted treatment difficult and expensive. On
the other hand, studies have recently identified certain key mechanical
signatures of cancer cells and tumor microenvironments that seem to be more
universal across tumors and even across cancer types. The question still
remains if and how these mechanical signatures of tumors may influence the
overall process of tumor growth and metastasis and can these be targeted to
alter the outcome of the disease. In this talk, I will present some of our
work on using mechanics based computational models to understand the role
of mechanics during various stages of tumor growth and metastasis and the
various insights gained from these models.
