ABSTRACT:
Composite multiferroic materials based on strain-mediated electromagnetic
coupling offer viable alternatives to intrinsic materials at room
temperature, where the latter are unstable or exhibit weak coupling.
Strain-mediated electromagnetic composites can be used in contactless
sensing and actuation applications as well as in wireless power transfer.
In such composites, the magnetoelectric coupling is based on the
transduction of mechanical strain between laminated piezoelectric and
magnetostrictive layers. Thus, the mechanical interface and the geometry
play crucial roles in the response. The efficiency of the magnetoelectric
coupling can be characterized by measuring the converse magnetoelectric
coupling coefficient. Challenges arise in complex geometries due to
magnetic anisotropy, magnetic shielding, and magneto-crystalline
anisotropy. The focus of this presentation is to review recent experimental
developments from the Experimental Mechanical Laboratory at SDSU in
characterizing the CME response of macroscale concentric composite
multiferroic ring structure.
