ABSTRACT:
Machine learning is an incredibly broad field, and for a given problem
statement often encompasses myriad routes to a solution. This presents a
significant challenge to both research and engineering; it is very easy to
have one's available time and budget absorbed by hyperparameter searches,
architecture evolution, and data pre-processing. However, there does not
yet exist a widely accepted mathematical framework by which to choose
parameters for a specific problem. In order to prevent machine learning
from becoming voodoo science, one can look for inspiration in the natural
world. Biological systems, ranging from *C. Elegans *to *H. Sapiens *are
extremely talented in anomaly detection, threat avoidance, and perceptual
understanding - all tasks that artificial systems struggle with. In this
talk, I present examples of traditional and novel machine learning systems
that have been constrained to qualitatively or quantitatively mimic
features of biological systems. These examples, and the lessons learned in
implementing them, provide a justification for searching out
biologically-feasible algorithms for ML research and engineering.
