*About*



*Dr. Ming-Hsiang (Ming) Tsou* is a Professor of Geography, San Diego State
University (SDSU) and the Founding Director of the Center for Human
Dynamics in the Mobile Age (HDMA). His research interests are in Big
Data, *Human
Dynamics, Social Media, Visualization, and Internet GIS. *He has served on
two U.S. National Academy of Science Research Committees in 2007 and 2013.
Tsou has been served as the PI in multiple large research projects funded
by the National Science Foundation. He established a new transdisciplinary
research center, Human Dynamics in the Mobile Age (
http://humandynamics.sdsu.edu) in Spring 2014.

*Abstract*



Data Scientists can collect and analyze social media and Big Data via smart
phones, sensors, and mobile devices with locational contents, such as
global positioning system tags, check-ins, place names, and user location
profiles. The dynamic characteristics of social media and Big Data provide
a great research opportunity for data scientists to study and model human
behaviors, communications, and movements. This talk will introduce a new
research field in Big Data, called “human dynamics”, which is a
transdisciplinary research field focusing on the understanding of dynamic
patterns, relationships, narratives, changes, and transitions of human
activities, behaviors, and communications.  Several representative research
projects, machine learning methods, and data mining applications will be
introduced in this talk.
