*TITLE: *From Heterogeneous Catalysts to Soft Materials Formulations: Roles
for High Throughput Experimentation in Industry
*TIME: * 3:00 PM
*LOCATION: *Gold Auditorium, Bioscience Center
*SPEAKER:* Dr. John M Newsam, Tioga Research, Inc.
*ABSTRACT: *High throughput experimentation (“HTE”) impacts a broad
spectrum of chemical, material and earth science areas. Yet, much of the
development of HTE technologies and techniques, as well as the majority of
their applications, have taken place in industry or in national facilities
working closely with industry. We consider the drivers behind such
developments, and we examine the extent to which special HTE skills &
technologies provide a robust basis in themselves for a sustainable
business. We ask how perspectives on the role of HTE can shift from early
conception through completion of a first application project, and how
requirements on technology concomitantly then evolve. And we look for
commonalities and synergies across diverse HTE application areas, taking
examples from the catalysis, fluid formulations and bioengineering fields.
*HOST:* Dr. Jose Castillo
*About our speaker:*
*Dr. John M Newsam*
John M Newsam holds BA Hons, MA and DPhil degrees in Chemistry from Oxford
University. A materials chemist by formal training, John has authored over
170 scientific publications and is an inventor on over 20 issued US
patents. He has lectured extensively on an international level, and been
recognized by several awards, including the Corday-Morgan Medal and the
Sidhu Award, and by election as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry,
and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. John has
been an Adjunct Professor at both UC Santa Barbara (Materials Department)
and UC San Diego (Chemistry & Biochemistry Department).
Dr. Newsam has served or serves as a Venture Partner or Advisor to four
private equity groups: NGEN Venture Partners (Santa Barbara CA and NY), ITI
Life Sciences (Scotland), Green Gateway Fund (Germany) and Windhover
Ventures (La Jolla CA).
As a professional consultant, John has contributed scientific and strategic
input to several US Fortune500 companies, to early phase biotech and
materials companies in the US, UK and Korea, to government institutions
such as IFP Energies Nouvelles in Paris, and he has served on numerous
academic advisory committees.
As a business innovator and entrepreneur, Dr. Newsam has to date co-founded
seven companies, DMK Pharmaceuticals (in 2016), Tioga Research, Inc. (in
2011), Bio4Front, Inc. (in 2008), fqubed (in 2002, acquired by Nuvo
Research in 2005), Integrated Discovery Sciences Corporation (in 2001,
acquired by Bio and Gene in 2005), hte Aktiengesellschaft (in 1999,
acquired by BASF in 2008), and FreedomVoice Systems (in 1996, acquired by
GoDaddy in 2016). *Some of his views on entrepreneurship are presented in
his 2014 TEDx talk **‘Entrepreneurship is learnt’*
