Hi all,

It has been brought to our attention that the phone scammers are contacting international faculty. This involves both the J-1s and those of you that may have faculty in H-1B status. I’m hoping that you folks can get the word out to your international scholars that if “anyone” calls and asks for a social security number or any private/personal information about them or their family, to please let this office know immediately. The caller may sound official, and may even be intimidating, but no one should be giving out this type of information via the phone, email, or U.S. mail. If the Federal or State government has any questions about an international scholar, they will call this office first.

Please help spread the word! Perhaps a good way to start is to notify the new scholars when they are checking in with you? Please share this information with your deans/chairs/directors also. Thanks in advance and have a nice weekend!

~Charleen~

Laura Buhs just posted at ISCA Network : International Scholar Advising Forum : Phone Scam.

One of our J-1 specialists received an unsolicited phone call from Tax Defense Net (phone number: 904-421-4437). The person knew her full name, asked if she has problems with the IRS and asked for her SSN. The scholar refused and notified me. I found a web site for this company which operates out of Jacksonville, FL. Has anyone else had this experience?
