With all due respect to Jay Harris and Theresa Garcia, I myself would prefer that we not discuss our preferemces publicly, and simply vote quietly and respectfully.

Otherwise a candidate discussed openly and early in the process, may carry inordinate weight.

The criteria I usually use in voting, in addition to the grade point average, include: (1) Did the student’s extra curricular activities make a real contribution to his department or to the college, and (2) What fraction of his work did the candidate complete at SDSU,

I am going to provide you with some information on each candidate along with a little write-up provided by the department. You must then respond with a reply email to me with your “single” vote. The deadline for me to receive votes will be 3:00 P.M. on Wednesday April 27th .

> Alejandrina was born and raised in Tijuana, Mexico. At the age of 18 she decided to follow her dream of becoming an aerospace engineer and moved to San Diego. With the support of her parents, she enrolled at Southwestern College and then transferred to San Diego State University. During her senior year she obtained an NSF-STEM research scholarship which led her to obtain an internship at General Atomics in composite materials. This fall, Alejandrina will pursue her Masters in Aerospace Engineering Structural Mechanics at San Diego State University under the guidance of Dr. Satchi Venkataraman.

After taking transportation engineering with Dr. Supernak, Josiah was inspired and found his calling and passion in civil engineering. He was involved with many student organizations such as MEP, ASCE, ITE, Tau Beta Pi, and Chi Epsilon. Josiah credits his strong desire to excel academically, along with an immense amount of love and encouragement from family, as the driving force in his success.

> Micah Schirmer is from Lebanon, Pennsylvania and enlisted in the Navy shortly after graduating from high school in 1993. As an Electronics Technician, he served two deployments in the Persian Gulf on a guided missile cruiser, the U.S.S. Cowpens, based in San Diego. In 2000, Micah received an honorable discharge from the Navy and began working for the Dept. of Homeland Security as a Telecommunication Specialist. He designed and maintained a federal law enforcement communication system used by the Border Patrol, DEA, FBI, and other government offices. He then began taking classes at Mesa College to qualify for transfer to SDSU’s Electrical Engineering program in the fall of 2006. Just before starting at SDSU, he accepted a position with BAE Systems and continued to work with law enforcement communications. For the next 5 years, he attended SDSU classes while working full time until completing his degree last December. Micah is still employed at BAE Systems and is now married to his wife, Hiroko, and has two children, Nicholas and Jewel.

> Originally from the small town of Hamar, Norway, Thomas Bruget spent his junior year of high school as a foreign exchange student in Thousand Oaks, California. On top of enjoying the sunny, beautiful weather, Thomas made many great friends during this year, making it an easy decision to return to southern California to attend SDSU. Thomas naturally excelled in math and science and after speaking with Dr. Mehrabadi, he was convinced that mechanical engineering was the perfect fit. Outside of classes he worked on Dr. Bhattacharjee’s flame tower project and was active in Tau Beta Pi. In the fall, Thomas will be going to Stanford to pursue a master’s degree in mechanical engineering, and possibly an MBA.
