<P class=MsoNormal>Dear Colleagues:<o:p></o:p></P>
<P class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></P>
<P class=MsoNormal>Most departments in the College of Engineering are
currently structured with either two or three programs reporting to a chair.
The only exceptions are Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering. I wish to
reorganize these two programs so that both report to a single chair.
<o:p></o:p></P>
<P class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></P>
<P class=MsoNormal>Dr. Monte Mehrabadi has agreed to lead a committee
comprised of faculty from both the Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering
programs to accomplish this task. The purpose of this committee is to develop
a new department that will serve both programs, maintaining accreditation and
assuring sustainability of each. I have asked Monte to organize the committee
immediately and provide me a preliminary report of their progress no later
than the end of the spring semester. During the interim, Dr. Allen Plotkin
will remain as chair of Aerospace Engineering.<o:p></o:p></P>
<P class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></P>
<P class=MsoNormal>There are clearly many commonalities both in the teaching
and research efforts of Mechanical and Aerospace faculty, as well as many
distinct differences. I feel strongly that both programs will gain from this
reorganization. Please provide Dr. Mehrabadi or me with your thoughts or
suggestions as this process moves forward. Thanks.<o:p></o:p></P>
