Staff Member Participates in STEM Outreach Program
Tracy Arnold, Information Technology Consultant for the College of Engineering, was recently asked to take part in the Digigirlz one day camp here in San Diego. This program, sponsored by Microsoft, gives girls the opportunity to learn about careers in technology and the role that women play in these fields.
Tracy took this opportunity to speak of her own career experiences in Technology as a woman in order to educate and inspire these girls who my be considering STEM career paths.
35 girls participated in hands on projects using computers with assistance from Tracy and Microsoft employees. The day also included a presentation by Tracy about a day in her life working at SDSU and information on the College of Engineering. The girls had opportunity for mentorship with a woman working in the Technology field. Each girl participating received lunch and a gift messenger bag stuffed with goodies courtesy of Microsoft. Outreach such as this goes a long way to promote STEM careers to young women and further helps SDSU’s reputation as a diverse place of study. Great job Tracy!
AE/EM Students Have Design/Build Fly Success
The SDSU College of Engineering Design/Build Fly team recently competed in the 2009 DBF Competition hosted by Raytheon Missile Systems near their facilities in Tucson, AZ. The Team from SDSU placed 15th out of 52 participating schools, beating such competitors as UCLA, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Embry Riddle University.
Design, Build and Fly is an annual competition sponsored by the American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) for college students. The competition provides real world aircraft design experience by providing students the opportunity to use a hands on approach by validating it through analysis methods developed in the classroom. The project encourages innovation and new design challenges by changing the rules and mission requirements each year.
Engineering Faculty Get Kudos from Development
University Relations and Development’s Newsletter, The URAD Times, recently gave praise to two SDSU Faulty Members for their outstanding efforts in development. Both faculty happened to be from the College of Engineering!
Ken Walsh successfully asked the J.R. Filanc Construction Company to make a lead pledge of $100,000 over the next four years to support a new faculty line for the J.R. Filanc Construction and Engineering Management (CEM) program.
This additional gift re-enforces the Filanc family's commitment to CEM's success and reflects their trust in Ken, our students and the university's commitment to honoring their investment. This lead contribution will also serve as a challenge for other industry partners to make the same investment, helping us reach our goal of fully funding the position with annual funds over the next three years. Congratulations Ken!
Bruce Westermo successfully secured a $32,000 gift from the Girard Foundation for Project Lead the Way (PLTW). The gift will provide support for various programs at PLTW's San Diego affiliate office, located at SDSU. Thanks Bruce!
Dr. Colin Milberg has been selected for the 2009 National Teaching Award from the Associated Schools of Construction. According to ASC, “the award recognizes (his) commitment and dedication to advancing construction education”.
The award was presented in early April at the 45th General Meeting of ASC at the University of Florida held at the Rinker School of Building Construction. Dr. Milberg was one of just 12 people in the country to receive this honor.
Dr. Milberg has stated that his primary teaching objective is to bridge the gap between education and practice, so that students both understand the relevance of the material and share in the depth and excitement of that material without needing multiple years’ experience in the workforce.
Congratulations Dr. Milberg!
Dr. Tom Impelluso was honored on April 29th as the College of Engineering’s recipient of the 2009 University Senate Excellence in Teaching Awards.
According to the University Senate, nominees for this award are recognized for contributions made to students, to their respective academic disciplines and to the campus communities. Dr. Impelluso embodies all of these criterion, as Dean Hayhurst summed up when he said “Dr. Impelluso is an outstanding professor and scholar whose teaching excellence, both in the classroom and in the development of new instructional technologies, has greatly benefited our students and the university community”.

The Spring 2009 College of Engineering Alumni Mixer was held on Thursday, April 23rd at Trophy’s Restaurant in La Jolla. There was a great turnout with alumni from various departments showing up to reconnect and network. Thank you to all of the faculty members who attended!
An additional alumni event was held on April 30th in San Jose at the Loft Bar and Bistro. At this event, Dean Hayhurst and Development Officer Christa Farmer hosted a sit down dinner with a small group of the College’s key alumni in the Bay Area.
In the upcoming months please look forward to similar alumni events as well as department only development and networking events. Thus far these events have proven to be a great success, with one alumnus pledging $4,000 to the college just days after attending our event in La Jolla!
Samantha Loveira is the Department Coordinator for Mechanical Engineering and has been working in the college for just over a year.
Samantha was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. She received her BA in English from California State University, Northridge in 2006.
Afterward, she spent a year working with the Director’s Guild of America, before moving to San Diego and joining the staff at SDSU. She is currently pursuing her MA in English from SDSU with an emphasis in Children’s Literature. Her hobbies include writing, reading, vegan cooking and baking, and travel. Samantha has recently joined San Diego’s only full contact roller derby league, the Renegades. She is also currently penning her first young adult novel.
