Dear SDSU Community,

As part of the university's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiative and
5-year strategic plan, I am proud to announce the renaming of two campus
buildings in honor of two outstanding individuals.

This spring, we will honor the late Dr. Charles B. Bell Jr. through the
renaming of East Commons and Dr. Ellen Ochoa through the renaming of West
Commons.

Both Bell and Ochoa are being recognized with this unique honor given their
contributions and distinction within their respective fields. Our priority
is to honor individuals who have contributed significantly to public
service and to the university given their national and international
reputations as scholars.

I am pleased to honor both Bell and Ochoa during two dedication events,
both of which are free and open to the public. I invite you to attend and
celebrate with our community.

East Commons is being renamed the Charles B. Bell Jr. Pavilion in honor of
Dr. Bell, recognizing his national and international achievements as a
mathematician and one of San Diego State University’s first African
American professors.

Former Director of NASA’s Johnson Space Center

The Honorary Naming Dedication will be held
