Welcome to the Deans' Team.  I look forward to working with you both toward
the success of the College of Engineering, especially with respect to
Student Success.  I believe with a full team in the Dean's office this
college can continue to achieve success, moving forward with the momentum
from our late Dean Monte!!!!!!!  May he rest in peace!!!

It is my pleasure to inform you that Dr. Temesgen Garoma, Professor of
Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering has agreed to serve as
the Interim Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research. The search
for the open position of a permanent Associate Dean for Graduate Studies
and Research will start in the Fall 2019 semester. I would like to thank
the College Executive Committee members who provided their input and
endorsed the plan of the appointment of key administrative positions in the
College of Engineering.

As Interim Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research in the College
of Engineering, Dr Garoma will be responsible for overseeing initiatives
that support and enhance the graduate programs and research enterprise
within the College of Engineering including; but not limited to:

   - Managing and strengthening the Joint Doctoral Program and other
   existing graduate programs and developing new graduate programs, including
   online programs in collaboration with CES.
   - Serving as liaison to the SDSU Research Foundation, managing grants
   and contracts (approving the proposal routing forms, indirect costs, and
   cost sharing), and research infrastructure.
   - Serving as liaison to the SDSU Graduate Division, working with
   Graduate Admissions, facilitate addressing graduate student concerns,
   conflicts, and resolutions, and other matters pertaining to graduate
   studies.
   - Supervising college faculty applications for internal university
   research grants and graduate student fellowships.
   - Managing and conducting periodic meetings of the College Graduate
   Committee. Working directly with departmental graduate advisors.
   - Participating in the College Computer Infrastructure Committee.
   - Developing the website that hosts information about faculty research,
   college centers, institutes, etc.
   - Facilitating the organizational and institutional support for major
   research initiatives and proposals (including undergraduate students’
   research activities), establishing and managing faculty mentoring program,
   reviewing proposals, assisting faculty in identifying new research
   opportunities, especially those that are interdisciplinary.
   - Facilitating faculty application for extramural research grants,
   training grants, and graduate student fellowships.
   - Ensuring responsible research conduct and research safety.
   - Developing research collaborations with San Diego's robust local
   engineering industry and governmental laboratories, overseeing the
   College's technology transfer and industrial research relations, and
   approving requests for consultant or other service agreements. Working with
   Industry Partners Committee on the Dean’s Industrial Advisory Board.
   - Managing data collection and reporting for collegiate research and
   graduate programs.
   - Coordinating with Department Chairs the scheduling of graduate courses
   and the resolution of course conflicts.
   - Working with the College Curriculum Committee and reviewing graduate
   curriculum proposals.
   - Representing the College in the University committees and Task Forces
   related to graduate studies matters as requested by the Dean.
   - Soliciting faculty participation, in coordination with College Dean,
   in the College and University committees related to graduate studies.
   - Representing the College, when needed, at external (with respect to
   the College or University) committees and meetings.
   - Other tasks related to the graduate programs and research for the
   College as requested by the Dean.
