*Provost’s Innovation for Excellence Award*


*The Provost’s Innovation for Excellence Award recognizes academic
departments or schools that have through collaborative effort implemented a
new initiative that has generated new momentum toward achieving one or more
of the key goals of SDSU’s Building on Excellence strategic plan: *
*STUDENT SUCCESS*

· Improved retention and four and six year graduation rates

· Decreased time to degree

· Elimination of achievement gaps in graduation rates

· Growth in student honors, achievements, or production of exemplary work

· Improved advising or mentoring programs and outcomes

· Increased recruitment and retention of underrepresented faculty and staff

· Innovative, transformational, or international educational experiences

· Improved time to degree for masters and doctoral students

· Greater number of undergraduate students involved in entrepreneurship

· Positive trends in graduate student quantitative metrics of quality



*RESEARCH AND CREATIVE ENDEAVORS*

· Increased research and creative activity, including grants, publications,
patents, research impact, and attendance at art events and performances

· Greater number of undergraduate students involved in research

· Greater graduate student involvement in research, conferences, and
publication



*COMMUNITY AND COMMUNICATION*

· Strengthened community engagement for students, faculty, and / staff

· Events, activities, and communication designed to bring diverse
participants together

· Strengthened relationships with alumni and donors


*TIMELINE*
March 5, 2018     Applications due to Provost’s Office
May 1, 2018        Awards announced

*AWARD STRUCTURE*
*One to five* awards to academic departments or schools, ranging from
$10,000 to $50,000.  Awards are to be used for programmatic support,
professional development, equipment or other activities that, in the
opinion of the Provost, support the academic mission of the university.
Non-academic departments are not eligible for this award.

*APPLICATION PROCESS*
Academic department chairs or school directors shall by March 5 submit a *one-
to three-page summary* to the Office of the Provost that a) describes the
new innovation or initiative that has been developed and implemented, b)
indicates which strategic plan goal it targeted, and c) documents its
impact and measurable outcomes.  Only one submission per department or a
group of more than one academic department/school.  Deans shall review and
provide recommendations to the Provost on all applications from their
college; applications shall also be reviewed by the Senate Faculty Honors
and Awards committee.  Dean and committee recommendations are due by April
2 to the Provost, who will select and announce up to five awardees no later
than May 1.
