[Staff] [Faculty] Executive Committee Mtg. Minutes

I share Allen’s concern on the decision to choose the student with the highest GPA as the college valedictorian. Electing the student with the highest GPA eliminates several important factors we used in the valedictorian election process in the past. These factors include

Student’s involvement in the SDSU  campus community and student body;

Student’s involvement in the community;

Student’s leadership abilities.

Student’s research and other scholarly activities.

Best regards

Yusuf

Subject: Re: [Faculty] Executive Committee Mtg. Minutes

The Minutes of April 19 contain the following:

13. Roundtable
Dean Mehrabadi – Discussed the issue of selecting the Valedictorian for the College and the
Departments. The Executive Committee unanimously agreed that the selection of the College of
Engineering and Departmental Valedictorian should be based solely on GPA. Further, the Executive
Committee unanimously agreed that the major GPA should be used, and no votes should be taken. This
procedure will be applied beginning Spring 2018.

The faculty have discussed the choice of College Valedictorian at faculty meetings the last two years and it had been suggested that perhaps this discussion should be continued through proper channels. The Executive Committee is presenting us with a procedure apparently adopted without faculty input. In addition, the choice of the Department Outstanding Student (not Valedictorian) seems to be included in this procedure. Also, although the meeting was held on April 19 the Minutes were released well after the end of the semester.

If other faculty are concerned by this I note that this announced procedure would actually be implemented towards the end of the Spring 2018 semester.

Allen
