Donovan,

I disagree. In that case why not just choose the student with the highest
GPA. Faculty should be able to state their opinion of our students to
help identify the most deserving student that will represent our students.

Thanks

Yusuf

As the departmental outstanding graduates have been selected, voting for
Engineering Valedictorian will now take place. Please select one and email
me your choice by* 12:00pm, Wednesday April, 13th. *

The candidates are:

*Ace ElacioMajor GPA 3.88, SDSU GPA 3.85*
Ace Barrera Elacio, who will graduate with honors and receive a Bachelor’s
Degree in Aerospace Engineering in May 2016, was selected as an Outstanding
Student in the Aerospace Engineering class of 2016. He will be graduating
with the highest overall and major GPA in his graduating class at San Diego
State University.

Ace is a military dependent. Throughout his life, he was transferred
between a multitude of schools and has been exposed to an abundance of
foreign cultures and environments, which is reflected in Ace’s flexibility
and compassion for others. With Ace’s father being deployed on a regular
basis, a working mother, and a younger sister, Ace was groomed at a young
age to take on a considerable amount of responsibility for his family.
With his father having retired from the US military in 2010, the Navy could
no longer sponsor his education in Japan. Ace returned to the United
States on his own at the age of sixteen, leaving his family in Yokosuka,
Japan. Under the close watch of his extended family, Ace continued his
studies and graduated high school as both a student athlete and a
distinguished scholar with high honors. Moving forward, he made a home for
himself in San Diego, California, his original place of birth. As the son
of a United States Military Veteran, Ace was instilled with the values of
discipline, perseverance, integrity, and attention to detail; qualities
that have been integral to his success. With a financially struggling, yet
supportive family, Ace has been highly driven to excel and compete in the
classroom, as with all other pursuits.

Fortunate enough to be able to attend school on his father’s veterans
benefit, Ace took full advantage of his time at SDSU. Ace is a perennial
dean’s lister, earning high marks consistently throughout his college
career. In addition to this, he is well involved at SDSU, particularly
with research on composite structures to extend the life cycles of Navy
F/A-18 fighter jets, under the guidance of Professor Satchi Venkataraman.
His research has allowed him to serve as a leading officer in SDSU’s
DesignBuildFly Team and, recently, as a composite design expert for SDSU
Rocket Project. Ace will be applying to both Navy Officer Candidate School
and Air Force Officer Training School.

*Edward PadillaMajor GPA 3.86 SDSU GPA 3.20*

Edward Padilla grew up in Coachella, California where he would work in the
vineyards while attending Coachella Valley High School. Originally, he
enrolled in San Diego State University as a Criminal Justice major, until
an engineering elective encouraged him to follow his dream of being a
builder. In his years of attendance, Edward has been involved in AGC/CMAA
student chapter, Kappa Alpha Order greek fraternity, and the ASC Reno
Competition. Upon graduation, Edward plans on utilizing his Construction
Engineering degree to work on large commercial projects for a General
Contractor. He later plans on obtaining his Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design (LEED®) – Accredited Professional and Construction
Management Association of America (CMAA) – Certified Construction Manager
credentials. Furthermore, his biggest goal is to serve as a role model and
as an influence for others in his community.

*_________________________________________Linh TonMajor GPA 3.96 SDSU GPA
3.94*

We will recommend Linh Ton who is the best student described by faculty.
She has almost a perfect GPA, 3.96. She is outstanding and very worthy
students who will be graduating in May 2016. She has participated in many
student activities.

*Marshall DraperMajor GPA 3.88, SDSU GPA 3.90*

Marshall Draper has taken an unusual and non-traditional path to becoming
an enthusiastic and passionate SDSU graduate. When he finished high school
in 2000, he lacked a sense of direction, decided not to attend college and
entered the workforce working in the HVAC industry. With time, however,
Marshall found purpose and discipline, enrolled in a community college,
persisted with his studies while working full-time, and fulfilled the
prerequisites for transferring to SDSU. His interest in pursuing academic
excellence intensified after enrolling at SDSU, and he has been on the
Dean’s List every semester. Marshall is an exemplary team player as
demonstrated in the leadership he is providing for his senior design
project team in the development of an automated intelligent personal
transportation device for those with limited mobility. He values integrity,
dedication, teamwork, and professionalism as key traits of a practicing
engineer. Marshall exemplifies someone who is willing to take a risk and
make sacrifices in order to grasp the full potential of education. His
aspiration is to provide leadership in the energy industry and contribute
to a sustainable future for society – a long way from where he was in 2000!!
