> As the digital age washes over traditional forms of research and teaching,
> one area at the forefront of academic change is the Humanities. Digital
> technologies such as computing, the Internet and data collection, analysis
> and dissemination are bringing about enormous changes to fields that have
> historically focused primarily upon language, the printed word, exploration
> of the past, the philosopher’s perspective, or artistic expression.
> Dramatically new possibilities are emerging and it is becoming evident that
> this evolution is creating new paradigms, for the Humanities, digital
> technologies and related sciences.
>
> To help us explore these changes and where they may be taking the world
> community, the Department of Classics and Humanities is honored to present
> a conversation between two leading national experts who have long served at
> the forefront of the digital world and the cutting edge of the Humanities.

> Dr. Vint Cerf is Vice President and Chief Internet Evangelist for Google
> and a recipient of the National Medal of Technology, the Turing Award (the
> “Nobel prize for technology”) and the highest civilian award in the United
> States, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He is widely known as one of the
> “fathers of the Internet” for his pioneering work co-designing the TCP/IP
> protocols and the architecture of the Internet. He serves on the U.S.
> National Science Board, as president of the Association for Computing
> Machinery and formerly served as chairman of the board of the Internet
> Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). Dr Cerf is recipient of
> over twenty honorary doctorate degrees. He holds a Bachelor of Science
> degree in Mathematics from Stanford University and Master of Science and
> Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from UCLA.
>
> Dr. Bruce Cole is the longest-serving chairman of the National Endowment
> of the Humanities (NEH), having served from 2001-2009. In that role, he was
> responsible for awards totaling over 800 million dollars and established
> national programs such as “We The People” and the “Picturing America
> project.” He also created the NEH’s Digital Humanities Initiative and
> Office, which made the Endowment a national leader in this new frontier of
> humanities access and knowledge. Prior to his engagement at the NEH, Dr.
> Cole, a recipient of nine honorary doctorate degrees, served as
> Distinguished Professor of Art History and Professor of Comparative
> Literature at Indiana University in Bloomington. He has written fourteen
