Fast Track with 3D Printing
In today’s world start-ups do not have to wait months or years to develop a prototype. With the access of 3D printers, students can build and test in days. The new MakerBot Replicator 2 3D printer of the Zahn Innovation Center does just that. David Elliott, CEO of Switch Box and one of the Zahn Innovation Center’s newest teams, is building a surf fin box using this new technology. The ability to build variations of their product to show customers has given David more insight than ever before. Students’ high interest has led the Center to conduct a workshop on how to use the 3D printer and will continue to do so. The 3D printer is one more win in eliminating barriers for our SDSU entrepreneurs.
Watch out for Zahn Innovation Center 3D printer workshop coming next month.
New companies in the Center
Join us in welcoming the two newest teams that have been admitted to the Zahn Center: BitPallet and Switch Box. BitPallet is a cloud based data platform for machine to machine (M2M) control. The technology is ultra-scalable with no restrictions on data size. Heading BitPallet is Reghu Rajan, an Executive MBA student focused on business development and marketing. Switch Box was started by undergraduate business student David Elliott. Switch Box is developing a universal surfboard fin adapter. The adapter will give surfers the ability to switch between different purpose fins in the market.

Funding time
As companies more forward with their venture the most important concern becomes funding. Funding can come from many sources. In the past month three companies have receive grant awards to support the development of their prototypes. Faculty Daniel Goble with Sports Tracking Systems (STS) is developing a concussion detector and Doug Stow with Repeat-Station Imaging (RSI) is developing an aerial mapping technology and both have received the SDSU President’s Leadership Fund Award. The award is to help fund student and faculty working on innovative and ground-braking projects. Great job STS and RSI!
John Walsh of Grow Energy is working on a new algae solar panel received the NCIIA E-Team grant. The E-Team grant is awarded to college entrepreneurs working on a technology based invention. The $5,000 grant is only the first milestone of a program that can award a total of $150,000. Congrats Grow Energy!
Break Points
Talk to a seasoned entrepreneur and they can tell you about unfortunate, bad, and terrible situations they have faced. Larry Kesslin, Author of Break Points did everyone a favor by outlining the seven break points that ruin startups. In his workshop to the Zahn members he went into depth about what to avoid and how to create a solid foundation. Break point #4, partnerships pain, resonates well with students. Students can now better choose their business partners in a time when multiple career paths are possible.
