This is a reminder of a faculty candidate seminar which will be held on
March 7, 2012, Wednesday, 11:00 A.M.
at E-423 by Dr. Felix Huang.

His talk is entitled:

"Robotics and Virtual Reality as Tools to Study Human Motor Learning"

Abstract:

Robotics and virtual reality technology offer new opportunities to uncover
the nature of the human motor system. Our intuition tells us that these
tools can be used to enhance perceptions, speed the acquisition of new
skills, and perhaps expand human capabilities.  However, the challenge with
any training paradigm is whether the individual can generalize learning to
real-world conditions. This presentation will explore how engineering models
and experimental methods offer insights into how humans achieve dexterity in
the control of their limbs.  We will discuss application to surgical
training and therapy for stroke survivors.

Short Bio:
Dr. Felix C. Huang is a post-doctoral fellow at the Rehabilitation Institute
of Chicago (RIC). His major research interests include human motor control,
robotic rehabilitation for stroke survivors, expert skill training for
surgery, and control design of haptic devices. Beyond a passion for
research, Dr. Huang has been committed to advancing teaching and mentoring
of new investigators. He worked as a full-time science teacher in East Palo
Alto, CA with the Teach for America program. Dr. Huang completed his Ph.D.
in Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Operations Engineering at the
University of Michigan in 2006. At RIC he investigated robotics and virtual
reality systems as tools for motor control and rehabilitation research.
