Hi folks,
The e-newsletter below was sent today to all of the alumni and friends on
our email list - almost 3,000 names. We thought you would want to see it as
well.
Thanks to Chris Paolini, Levi Lentz and Carly House for a job well done!

Message from the Dean
Dean HayhurstAs some of you may remember, the College of Engineering once
published a newsletter entitled "Aztec Engineer". In that spirit, we have
created an updated, e-mail newsletter aimed at keeping our college's valued
alumni and friends informed of all that is new and exciting unfolding on
Montezuma Mesa. Just as engineering is constantly changing, the College of
Engineering is constantly adapting its programs and curriculum to meet the
needs of industry and to enable our students to transition flawlessly into
either industry or advanced studies, being equipped with the most
contemporary working knowledge of today's engineering world. Here are a few
facts:
* In the last five years enrollment has grown by over 35%; a total of
2,400 students are now enrolled in Engineering
* There is a newly launched and rapidly growing bachelors program in
construction engineering.
* Bioengineering, our newest masters program, is up and running and
three new joint doctoral degree programs with UCSD in Electrical and
Computer, Structural, and Bioengineering are coming on-line this year.
* The University continues to invest in new engineering equipment,
keeping our laboratories up to date.
* We have hired many new (and brilliant) faculty in the past 5 years,
keeping our teaching and research programs at the highest level.
* Engineering top's the University's list for a new building
I'm sure that you will enjoy this electronic glimpse into Engineering on
Montezuma Mesa; or, even better, please visit and see for yourself.

Dr. fred harris Honored for 40 Years of Service
Fred Before
Fred Now
To anyone who has studied Digital Signal Processing, the name fred harris
should ring a bell. Dr. harris is one of the first innovators of this
technology, which converts signals, such as speech, music or images, into a
series of numbers representing the amplitude of those signals. These
numbers are processed in a digital computer to alter the signal. This
technology is unknowingly enjoyed by all, as it reduces noise, removes
interference and enhances specific components.

Students Prepare for the Global Engineering Market
Study Abroad More Popular Than Ever
With the rapid gStudy Abroadlobalization of the engineering workplace,
developing skills to work effectively in a global environment is critical. A
popular way that SDSU students are enhancing their engineering education is
participation in one of the many study abroad programs offered by the
College of Engineering. Our international programs have grown steadily over
the past several years, providing s tudents and faculty excellent
opportunities for international experiences. Read more about study abroad

Construction Engineering Opens New Internship and Career Center
The J.R. Filanc Construction Engineering & Management Program (CEM) is one
of the fastest growing fields of study on campus, with enrollment increasing
steadily over the past years. Currently, over 150 students are enrolled in
ConstructionCEM. This past spring, CEM opened its Internship and Career
Development Center (ICDC) with Ron Meler as Director. The Internship &
Career Development Center is an important resource for students in helping
them gain valuable industry experience and setting them up to make an
immediate impact when they enter the work force. The ICDC's mission is to
match students with companies for meaningful internships as well as
permanent employment. Read more about construction internships.

Alumni Connections
Over the last year, the College of Engineering has hosted several events to
give alumni the opportunity to get back in touch with one another, and keep
up to date on events and happenings within the college. In the fall a mixer
was held in Mission Valley with a lively group of more than 60 guests,
representing all four of the College's departments.

Spotlight on Student Projects
Student organizations are an important part of an engineering students'
education. In each field, student organizations provide
opportunitieshttp://engineering.sdsu.edu/newsletter/photosfall2009/Student%2
0Projects-Photo1.jpg to work on projects that give students real world
experience. On any given day at SDSU, you might find engineering students
working on the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Formula Car, the
Concrete Canoe Project, or their individual senior design projects, many of
which are sponsored by local companies, such as Cubic Corp. and SAIC.

Shake Table Makes Waves
Over the last year, the SDSU College of Engineering's new shaking table,
which simulates seismic activity during an earthquake, has been attracting
attentioShake Tablen from media, industry, academia and the community. The
table, powered by a fast-moving hydraulic actuator and controlled by
computer, can mimic any displacement time-history profile, ranging from
seismic ground motions to floor motions at any level of a building
structure.
