CEM Holds Donor Wall Unveiling

 Philanthropic partners of the J.R. Filanc Construction Engineering and
Management Program at San Diego State University were invited to attend the
Donor Honor Wall unveiling and reception on Tuesday, May 19th at the Program
offices at SDSU.  It was a wonderful celebration marking a new tradition for
the CEM program and another opportunity to reflect how powerful vision,
leadership and  generosity can be when combined with hard work, integrity
and determination.  

David Hayhurst, Dean of the College of Engineering, and Ken Walsh, Director,
J.R. Filanc Construction Engineering and Management Program, addressed the
guests, thanking them for their tremendous support of this growing program.
Key honorary guests included, Jack Filanc, Mark Filanc and Kevin Elliott.

Mark Filanc of Filanc Construction Company stands with Dr. Ken Walsh at the
CEM Donor Honor Wall Unveiling. They are pictured with the Brady Hoke
helmet, which serves as a traveling recognition for large gifts to the
university during the Comprehensive Campaign.Filanc Construction is one of
the largest supporters of the CEM program at SDSU and has been a constant
supporter since Mark's brother, Pete Filanc, began working with Dr. Janusz
Supernak to begin the development of CEM in 2000.

In the Spotlight

	Eugene Olevsky Honored with 2009 Monty Award

Eugene Olevsky, director of the SDSU-UCSD Joint Doctoral Program in
engineering sciences, is an expert in powder sintering. The research from
his Powder Technology Lab is applied to fuel and solar cells, hydrogen
storage and nanotechnology. He has received a National Science Foundation
Career Award, a Humboldt Fellowship, a TRW Excellence in Teaching Award and
the Albert W. Johnson University Research Lectureship, the highest research
honor bestowed by SDSU. He is also a Fellow of the American Society of
Mechanical Engineers. The Monty Awards are given out each year to
outstanding faculty members to recognize their contributions to the
University and the SDSU Community. Congratulations Eugene!

. The Annual Staff Appreciation BBQ was be held on Friday, June 5th at 12
Noon in front of the Engineering Building. Thanks to everyone who attended!

. Thank you to all of the faculty members and staff volunteers who attended
this year's Commencement ceremonies.  It was a great day and we had a very
positive turnout.

	Kee Moon Recognized by Northrop Grumman

Mechanical Engineering professor Kee Moon was recently honored with the 2009
Northrop Grumman Excellence in Teaching Award.  The award, which is selected
through a peer review process, recognizes faculty members for their
successes in the classroom.  Kee's innovative approach to teaching and
creative development of new course materials made him the ideal candidate
for the 2009 award.  Great job Kee! 

Satchi Venkataraman wins AIAA Award

The AIAA San Diego section recently announced that Dr. Satchi Venkataraman
had been selected to receive that AIAA Award for Outstanding Contribution to
Aerospace Education. Satchi was chosen for this award based on his many
achievements in the SDSU AE/EM Department and for the respect and rapport he
has fostered with his students. An awards banquet was held on Thursday, May
21st at the Clubhouse of the Admiral Baker Golf Course Mission Gorge.
Congratulations Satchi!

CEM Internship & Career Development Center Opens

The J.R. Filanc Construction Engineering and Management Program is pleased
to announce Ron Meler as its new Director of Internships and Career
Development. Ron is a long-time member of the San Diego construction
industry and has been active in several local companies, most recently as
vice president for operations at Sundt Construction, Inc.Ron is already
meeting with students to assist them in securing summer jobs and internships
in the construction industry.  The Internship & Career Development Center is
an important resource for students in helping them gain valuable industry
experience.If you have internships or part-time job opportunities available
to our students, please contact Ron directly at 619-540-6502 or by e-mail at

Theresa Garcia Featured as "Aztec for Life"

	Theresa Garcia didn't intend to become a student affairs
professional - she received a bachelor's degree in business administration
from SDSU in 1991. But, when she joined the Mathematics Engineering Science
Achievement Engineering Program (MEP) staff, that all changed.

"My life as an Aztec started in 1986 when I was a 17-year old freshman,"
Garcia said. "For 18 years now, I've worked with MEP, with the last 11 years
as the director."

It was because of her involvement with MEP that Garcia also decided to
pursue a master's degree in educational leadership. Garcia was awarded her
degree during the College of Education and Division of Undergraduate Studies
commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 24.

Theresa, featured in a May issue of SDSUniverse, received her Master's
Degree in Educational Leadership from the College of Education, Division of
Undergraduate Studies at the May 24th Commencement Ceremonies at Cox Arena. 

In NSF funding, the Engineering Research Center is one of the plums. These
programs are quite prestigious, since funding persists for up to 10 years at
several million dollars per year. This year Prof. Rajagopal of Texas A&M
University is organizing an effort on the Science of Particulate Media in
Infrastructural, Environmental and Manufacturing Applications. 

Prof. Rajagopal is an external reviewer for the Mechanical Engineering
Department, and has invited a group of SDSU faculty working on industrial
applications of particles to join in on the university consortia organized
around this theme. Particles are common in San Diego, think sand, but
Professors German, Olevsky, and Morsi happen to be experts in sintered
particles used to  fabricate engineering products - from teacups to cutting
tools. Accordingly, they will spend this summer organizing and coordinating
their research on sintered particles with other groups that span from ores
and rocks to nano-particles. 

The proposed Engineering Research Center will work on new collaborations to
bridge between infrastructural, geological, atmospheric and manufacturing
applications of particles. Further, the intent is to propagate the core
knowledge gained in this industry-government funded program to other areas
where particulate materials are routinely used, as agricultural, food,
pharmaceutical, biological, energy and medical applications. 

Prof. German will be the Thrust leader for science and engineering in
manufacturing processes. Our ME faculty will join a distinguished team that
includes faculty from Texas A&M University (College Station), University of
Illinois (Champaign-Urbana), University of California (Berkeley), Texas A&M
(Kingsville), Technical University of Delft, Indian Institute of Technology
(Madras), and Pohang University of Science & Technology. We wish them all
the best on this quest.
