Subject: ARRA-based Proposals
To date, we know of 41 proposals that SDSU faculty intend to submit in
response to the Challenge Grants initiative, which is part of the National
Institute of Health's (NIH) portion of the stimulus package, or ARRA. The
deadline for receipt of Challenge Grant proposals at the NIH is April 27.
This number is in addition to the regular schedule of proposals that
normally flow through the SDSU Research Foundation (RF).
The largest number of proposals the RF has ever submitted in one day is 10.
They will break that record by reassigning staff to the pre-award office
from which the proposals are submitted; hiring additional staff temporarily;
cancelling vacations; and working during the weekends. They will not break
it by a factor of four. Proposals submitted on April 27 will not reach
Bethesda that day; therefore, please consider the deadline for completed
applications for Challenge Grants to be April 20.
This deadline will give the dedicated staff in the pre-award department the
time they need to process proposals in an orderly manner, and solve the
inevitable complications that will arise with the NIH, where thousands of
proposals from hundreds of institutions will be converging on an
understaffed office.
Best wishes for success.
