OBJECTIVES: Most students spend one year at their chosen
partner
institution followed by three years of research work at Janelia
Farm,
a world-class biomedical research center where outstanding
scientists
from diverse disciplines use emerging and innovative technologies to
pursue biology's most challenging problems. The Janelia Farm
Research
Campus is located on 689-parklike acres on the banks of the Potomac
River in Loudoun County, Virginia, just 30 miles from Washington,
D.C., and about eight miles north of Dulles Airport. Given the
size of the Janelia Farm community and the necessity to have a
critical mass of individuals studying any particular research
problem,
the sponsor sought to identify two or three areas of concentration.
After it held a series of workshops and consulted with the Advisory
Committee, the sponsor identified two synergistic areas that are
particularly well matched to the Janelia Farm environment: The
identification of general principles that govern how information is
processed by neuronal circuits and The development of imaging
technologies and computational methods for image analysis.

ELIGIBILITY
The sponsor supports a small number of well-prepared, highly
committed, and gifted students. Its application process is
unconventional. The sponsor does ask for the usual academic and
biographical information and reference letters; however, in
addition,
it will ask applicants to nominate one (or more) Janelia Farm
lab
heads to be their mentor (and also one or more at the partner
university, if desired). The sponsor then asks applicant tp write a
short research proposal targeted to that person's lab. This proposal
will be a very significant factor in our admission decisions. During
the interview applicant will be asked to explain this proposal.

FUNDING
Students will be fully supported financially for the duration
of
their participation in the program, so long as students remain in
good
standing academically, and are deemed to be making satisfactory
progress by theirr committee. This includes a stipend set for
£16,853
for the first year (paid in UK pounds while in England), or $30,000
annually (while in the USA), health insurance (in the USA) and some
other benefits. (In the UK, health care will be provided by the
National Health Service.) (flb)
