SYNOPSIS: <br>
 The sponsor offers two-year scholarships to undergraduate
students<br>
to provide the opportunity to participate in an educational program<br>
intended to ensure a diverse and highly talented science and<br>
technology human resource base to meet the mission, goals, and<br>
objectives of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Scholarships<br>
are tenable at all accredited U.S. colleges and universities, and<br>
include a stipend and full tuition and fees. <br><br>

OBJECTIVES: <br>
 The DHS Scholarship Program is intended for students interested
in<br>
pursuing the basic science and technology innovations that can be<br>
applied to the DHS mission. This education program is intended to<br>
ensure a diverse and highly talented science and technology
community<br>
to achieve the DHS mission and objectives. Eligible students must be<br>
studying in a homeland security related science, technology,<br>
engineering and mathematics (HS-STEM) field with an interest, major,<br>
or concentration directly related to one of the homeland security<br>
research areas listed below: Advanced Data Analysis and
Visualization;<br>
Biological Threats and Countermeasures; Border Security; Chemical<br>
Threats and Countermeasures; Communications and Interoperability;<br>
Community, Commerce and Infrastructure Resilience; Emergency<br>
Preparedness and Response; Explosives Detection, Mitigation and<br>
Response; Food and Agriculture Security; Human Factors; Immigration<br>
Studies; Infrastructure Protection; Maritime and Port Security;<br>
Natural Disasters and Related Geophysical Studies; Risk, Economics,<br>
and Decision Sciences; Social and Behavioral Sciences; and<br>
Transportation Security.  <br><br>

ELIGIBILITY<br>
 Applicants must be a U.S. citizen as of the application
deadline,<br>
and have a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.30 or higher on a 4.00<br>
scale, averaged over all U.S. institutions attended, including fall<br>
2009 grades if enrolled during that term. Applicants must be
majoring<br>
in a homeland security science, technology, engineering or
mathematics<br>
(HS-STEM) field which is a STEM field with coursework and/or
research<br>
relevant to a homeland security research area. Scholarships are<br>
intended for support during applicants' junior and senior years.
<br><br>
FUNDING<br>
 Appointments are for two years, beginning fall 2010. A
10-week,<br>
continuous, off-campus research internship at DHS or a
DHS-affiliated<br>
facility will be required during the summer between your first and<br>
second year appointments. Internship placement will be coordinated<br>
through this program. A one-year, full-time service requirement in a<br>
relevant HS-STEM field will be required.  Awardees will receive<br>
$1,000/month for 9 months during the academic year; $5,000 for the<br>
10-week summer internship; Full tuition and mandatory, nonrefundable<br>
