OBJECTIVES:  Throughout the ten weeks, the students interact with
leaders in the Congress and the Administration, industry, and
prominent non-governmental organizations.  Meetings with congressional
Committees, executive office departments, and corporate government
affairs offices are daily activities.  In addition, each student
researches and presents a paper on a topical engineering-related
public policy issue that is important to the sponsoring society.  The
students work under the guidance of a prominent engineering professor
who serves as Faculty-Member-in-Residence.  Students also interact
with and are mentored by representatives of their sponsoring
societies.

ELIGIBILITY
Eligible applicants must be juniors, seniors, or entering their
final year of undergraduate studies in engineering (or computer
science).  The sponsor will also accept applications from engineering
graduates who are beginning Masters level study in a policy-related
degree.  Interns must be citizens or legal permananent residents of
the United States.  In addition, ASCE, ANS, ASME, IEEE and SAE will
only sponsor students who are members of their societies.  IEEE will
sponsor computer science majors, as well as engineering majors, as
long as they are IEEE student members.

FUNDING
In addition to the stipend, the sponsor pays for housing at George
Washington University, as well as providing fare cards for use of the
Washington Metro system.  The sponsor anticipates sponsoring eight
