OBJECTIVES:
The sponsor supports graduate students working towards the Ph.D.
degree in the applied physical, biological and engineering sciences.
These fields include applied mathematics, statistics, and quantitative
aspects of modern biology. Here, "applied" is broadly construed to
mean fields of endeavor in which one applies, invents, and/or develops
results from the basic physical sciences to generate solutions to
problems of comparatively near-term, widespread human interest. The
Foundation does not support study in pursuit of the M.D. Degree or
work in descriptive biology, although it may support the Ph.D. portion
of a joint M.D./Ph.D. study program.
ELIGIBILITY
The sponsor supports graduate students working towards the Ph.D.
degree in applications of the physical sciences. Eligible applicants
must be students of the applied physical sciences who are citizens or
permanent residents of the United States of America. College seniors
wishing to pursue the Ph.D. degree in any of the fields of particular
interest to the sponsor, as well as graduate students already in the
process of doing so, may apply.
FUNDING
The award, which is based on merit, not need, consists of a
cost-of-education allowance and a personal-support stipend. The
cost-of-education allowance is accepted at the tenable schools in lieu
of fees and tuition. There are two fellowship options. The Five-Year
Hertz (Option 1) includes a stipend, paid over the nine-month academic
year, of $31,000. The award is renewable annually for up to five
years. Applicants may also choose to apply for the Five-Year
Coordinated (Option 2), which includes two years of support from the
sponsor with a $36,000 stipend for each nine-month academic period,
and a three year period in which the awardee accepts a fellowship from
another source and receives a $3,500 per year supplemental stipend
from the sponsor. There is a $5,000 additional stipend for Fellows
with dependent children. (des)
