OBJECTIVES: The major objectives for this program are to
introduce the student to scientific research supervised by graduate
faculty members, to help them develop their own philosophy of science,
to give them an opportunity to discover and experience the graduate
student lifestyle, and to aid them in selecting their Ph.D. Selected
students will be assigned to laboratories of graduate professors in
molecular biology, biophysics, genetics, bioinformatics,
nanotechnology, biochemistry, immunology or pharmacology. Each
student works on an independent research project under the guidance of
RPCI scientific staff and spends time attending various seminars. All
students present their research results (oral and poster) during a
scientific conference held at the end of the program.
ELIGIBILITY
Applications are received from students who have completed their
junior year in college (class of 2012) and have demonstrated a high
ability and interest in science. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or
permanent residents. Student career goals should focus on achieving a
graduate or professional degree in biomedical or natural sciences, or
achieving the Ph.D. and a research/teaching career. The sponsor is
particularly interested in applicants from non-research universities
who have had limited opportunities to research, under-represented
minority students and students from financially disadvantageous
backgrounds. Applications must include a $10 application fee.
FUNDING
The program will run from June 6 - August 12, 2011. Selected
participants receive a $3,500 stipend (National Cancer Institute
Program for fifteen participants) plus room or a $3,500 stipend (CURE
- Continuing Umbrella of Research Experiences for five participants)
plus room. (msw)
