</p><p class="MsoNormal">This year’s Kyoto Prize Symposium will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 15, in Montezuma Hall at the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union.<br><br>The Kyoto Prize Laureate in advanced technology is Dr. Takeo Kanade, a world-leading roboticist with a nearly 40-year history of technological innovation. He is the U.A. and Helen Whitaker University Professor at Carnegie Mellon University, and a director emeritus of CMU’s Robotics Institute and Computer Science department.<br><br>Dr. Kanade is recognized for his pioneering contributions to the theory of computer vision. He has introduced a series of landmark technologies in robotics, including automated driving, medical robotics and computer-assisted surgery, to name a few. Many people know his work through CMU’s unprecedented “No Hands Across America” driverless car project, which made global headlines in 1995; for introducing virtualized reality at the 2001 Super Bowl, which has since become a mesmerizing Hollywood camera technique; and for his leadership in face-detection algorithms for such diverse applications as organizing photos and enhancing homeland security.<br><br>The event is free and open to the public; registration is requested.
