During his time as chair the department has experienced significant enrollment increases, developed new programs, focused on a project-oriented curriculum, and increased its research productivity. Prior to joining SDSU, Monte was Professor and Chair of Mechanical Engineering at Tulane University, his alma mater. Monte's research focuses on mechanical behavior of materials with certain local structural features. He has served on journal editorial boards and as a visiting faculty member at UCSD, Tohiku University in Japan, Ecole Polytechnique in France.<o:p></o:p></span></p></div><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:18.0pt'>The University was extremely well served by the Dean's Search Committee, chaired by Asfaw Beyene, and including Fatih Buyuksonmenz, Sam Kassegne, Greg Morris, Khaled Morsi, Marilyn Newhoff, Nagy Nosseir, Mahasweta Sarkar, Ethan Singer, William Tong and Steve Welter.
