*In Loving Memory of Dr. Mao-Shiu Lin*

Dr. Mao-Shiu Lin taught electrical engineering at SDSU from 1966 to 2002
and served as Chair of the Electrical & Computer Engineering Department
from 1977 to 1986.  While serving as Chair, he moved the program model of
the Department from one that was largely teaching to one that was a
balanced combination of research and teaching.  The Department prospered
under his leadership.  Enrollment exceeded 900 students, second in number
only to the psychology department.  The research value of grant activity
was well over one million dollars.  Research work in the laboratories under
his supervision was funded by Federal and State grants, and by the
engineering industry.  A Professor Emeritus of SDSU, Dr. Lin was an
outstanding researcher and dedicated educator who loved teaching and who
made significant contributions to the Department of Electrical and Computer
Engineering.

Also, as a respected and admired leader in the Taiwanese community, Dr. Lin
passionately believed in Taiwan’s sovereignty and democracy.  He served as
President of the North America Taiwanese Professor’s Association (NAPTA) -
Southern California Chapter, President of the Taiwanese American Foundation
of San Diego and was a board member of the San Diego Taiwanese Cultural
Association.



Dr. Lin was loved and adored by his wife Michelle, daughters Wendy and
Joan, son-in-law David, and his grandchildren Shane (age 20), Tyler (age
18), Mia (age 17), and Gwen (age 15).  In retirement, Dr. Lin and Michelle
took the family on cruises around the world.  Dr. Lin loved to spend time
with his family, tend to his garden, and to watch SDSU Aztecs and Padres
games.  Dr. Lin passed away at the age of 92 at home on July 13, 2023
surrounded by his family after a long battle with cancer.
