Dear Engineering Faculty,
SDSU, Instructional Technology Services (ITS) will offer the Self-Paced Online Training (SPOT) program beginning this Fall 2022. Please read the details below and let me know if you are interested in participating in this training activity.
Best regards
Yusuf Ozturk
In response to a demand for more ongoing support to faculty in designing online and hybrid courses at SDSU, Instructional Technology Services (ITS) will offer the Self-Paced Online Training (SPOT) program beginning this Fall 2022, facilitated and supported by the ITS Instructional Design team. While this model will dramatically increase our ability to serve your faculty needs, we still have limited capacity and will need you to rank order your nominees—particularly as we roll out the new initiative.
The process will begin with colleges recommending participants for SPOT in Fall and Spring semesters. We are seeking input from you by August 1st; therefore, please “Reply All” to this email with an estimated number of potential faculty participants within your college who are 1) new to online course design and 2) already have an online or hybrid course to review. We would like to know the percentage of participants that you estimate would fall into each category.
Please note: Participation is voluntary; no course release or stipend is associated with the SPOT program. The participants may include both faculty who are new to online course design and faculty who already have developed online or hybrid courses.
Once SPOT participants are selected, they will complete a survey to help place them in either the “Design Pathway,” for those who are relatively new to online or hybrid course development, or the “Review Pathway,” which focuses on the review of an existing online or hybrid course to receive feedback for making improvements.
Program Expectations
All participants will:
* Complete modules based on survey, self-review, and consultation
* Complete asynchronous activities
* Receive feedback and consultations from their assigned coach
* Attend relevant workshops and office hours
SPOT Course Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
· Apply the core (24) objectives, elements, and guidelines of the Quality Learning and Teaching (QLT) Rubric, Community of Inquiry (CoI) Methodology, and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Framework to their hybrid or online course
· Review their course through the lens of QLT, CoI and UDL objectives, elements, and guidelines
· Revise their course based on review findings and consultation with an ITS coach
Tentative Timeline for SPOT Rollout:
8/22
Colleges provide ITS with faculty participant names, courses & priority levels
8/23
Participants receive email with survey from SPOT
8/26
Participants complete survey
9/2
Participants placed in Block 1 and/or 2
9/6
Fall Block 1 SPOT start date
10/14
Completion date for all Block 1 participants
10/17
Fall Block 2 SPOT start date
12/2
Completion date for all Block 2 participants
Estimated Time Commitment for Participants
The time frame for completing the SPOT program is dependent on the assigned pathway. Each block is roughly 6 weeks long.
* Design Pathway: Both Blocks 1 & 2 needed
* Review Pathway: Either Block 1 or 2
Note: Acceptance into the SPOT program will be subject to the number of applicants and the pathway determinations. Due to the longer time needed to complete the Design Pathway, less participants in this category can be accommodated per semester.
Questions or concerns about the new SPOT program? Please send them to the two lead co-facilitators, Andrea Saltzman Martin (saltzman at sdsu.edu<mailto:saltzman at sdsu.edu>) and Katie Hughes (khughes at sdsu.edu<mailto:khughes at sdsu.edu>).
Best,
Sean
