ABSTRACT:
Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) aims at detecting defects and assessing
the health status of materials and structures non-invasively. Among the
numerous techniques, Ultrasonic Guided Waves (UGW) are very suitable for
the inspection of large thin structures (e.g. composite aerospace panels,
arterial vessels) due to their “guided” nature and their complex dispersive
behaviour. UGW testing can greatly benefit from the ability to select the
most sensitive mode-frequency combination and from quantitative information
on the detected damage. In this talk, a hybrid computational model to
predict guided wave scattering in complex structures will be described: a
Semi-Analytical Finite Element (SAFE) solution for the “global” region is
coupled to a full FE approach for the “local” one, to efficiently extract
wave scattering spectra. Two case studies (2D and 3D) will be presented,
together with their experimental applications and the potential of
expanding to a variety of fields.
Bio: Margherita Capriotti received her Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from
University of California San Diego in 2019, pursuing research in the
Experimental Mechanics & NDE Lab. She previously graduated with her B.S.
and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Parma (Italy).
After Postdoctoral Research at Mayo Clinic in the Department of Radiology,
she joined San Diego State University as an Assistant Professor in the
Aerospace Engineering Department. Her research focuses on non-destructive
evaluation techniques, investigating thermal and elastic wave propagation
for structural assessment, combining computational and experimental
research. She works on the development of global-local models for elastic
wave scattering and on guided ultrasonic waves and infrared thermography
techniques for defect detection and characterization of a variety of
materials.
