[Faculty] Students declaring sick for class attendance and exams

Hi Satish,

Most software I used in the past such as adobe captivate, Techsmith
snagit and Camtasia works on both windows and MAC platforms. There may
be additional tools such as the one Askhan mentioned for those who has
access to an ipad pro.

I would like to encourage everyone to attend the workshops by ITS. I will
also attend since they are updated on technology and might have answers to
our questions already. If they do not , we are all engineers and solve
problems everyday. We will come up with a solution to this problem as
well.

Math Heavy : I think there are several workarounds for this. On blackboard
there is a calculated formula questions type that allows you to type
equations.

Best regards

yusuf

Any such software for those who do not have microsoft surface or iPad Pro
and have simple laptop with camera?

Like Ashkan, examinations in my courses are mostly only numerical and math
heavy. Any response on this would be helpful?

Thank you

You can also use iPad Pro and the app “Explain Everything” to capture your

There are many resources to record lectures. The main problem is how to
give exams for courses that has a lot of math.

As far as I know Respondus allows you to give exams that contain multiple
choice questions and essays without equations. I couldn’t find any online
resource that can handle writing math. If someone knows of a
resource/app/software that can handle online exams involving equations,
please shares it with us.

Thanks

Dear Colleagues,

If you have Microsoft Surface laptop, you can use Powerpoint to record your
voice while writing on screen by its pen. Then save it as mp4 to upload to
blackboard.

Hi Satish,

ITS may not have resources for recording all courses but you do not need
them either. Campus has a site license for Camtasia which allows you to
capture screencast. It will capture your slides, any annotations, sound
and allows you to edit it any many ways. This is a good way to capture
courses to be delivered at will at a later time. You really do not need
someone else to do it for you, you can do this in your office.

Campus has a few learning glass studios but my guess is , it will be
difficult to schedule and use them now with all campus moving to online at
once.

Finally if you like to conduct synchronous sessions , you can use zoom to
lecture, share your screen etc. You can also capture this for students to
view later.

My preference is recorded lectures and synchronous interactions. I hold
office hours and some discussions on zoom but prerecord all my lectures.

I am sure James Frazee’ s group will discuss these tools and more ( such as
respondus).

As for the exams : you will be surprised on the flexibility of the tools.

Hope it helps

Yusuf

Hi Yusuf,

Thank you for your answer (s). I am not sure, you answered everything but
good to investigate/start thinking. Not sure if my course or other courses
are suitable for questions like you have elaborated or observed in your
course. But this is time to work together and find the best possible
solution for our students, graders and ourselves.

*Does university has ITS resources to record all possible courses for
online offering in a short interval? *

Thank you

Hi Satish (and Faculty) ,

I have conducted online courses last couple of years and gave online
exams and quizzes. Using proctoring tools students we can limit students
access to internet and any other file on their computer and record the
students on video while taking the exam. Blackboard supports respondus
lockdown and recorder we can students access to the browser (only your
exam will be possible to open) and monitor student on video. The video
recorder also does eye tracking etc. Although it is not perfect, we may
be able to utilize this vehicle.

If you give your exams online ( either at student’s home or library or at a
test center) your graders can also access it and grade it on blackboard.
There are plenty of different type of questions.

Instructional Technology Services will run several *Virtual Instruction
Primer (VIP): Tools & Techniques Workshops this week and next Faculty may
register to the workshops using Eventbrite at the following link. *

https://www.eventbrite.com/e/virtual-instruction-primer-vip-tools-techniques-tickets-98713118595

I also have guides for students to use respondus browser and guide to
taking online quizzes. I will be happy to share. ITS has staff that can
help put together an exam online.

Hope it helps. Let me know any questions

Best regards

Yusuf

All or who can answer,

How we ask our graders and ourselves to grade hardcopy of the
assignments/quizzes/Mid-Term Exams when assignments/quizzes/mid-term/final
exam which can become a medium of transmission? More importantly, how to
conduct quizzes, mid-term and final examinations if online/virtual way of
teaching? Is there a guideline about it so can be communicated to our
students in such an event or especially after Spring break as President's
email instructs? Everything cannot be done online or virtual or it may not
be practical for all our courses.

Thank you

Engineering Faculty,

I have an exam today and several students contacted me during the last hour
or so declaring sick and requesting to take the exam at a later time.
University send an email to all students to be conscientious when they are
sick and discourage to come to work. Similarly we are asking students and
staff in our labs to work from home when they are sick.

If students contact you to ask for accommodation and an exam or homework
please follow university policies. Please use your best judgement to
decide during these unusual times and when in doubt consult university
procedures. The paragraph below summarizes the procedure for a student to
declare sick and request academic accommodations.

Students may provide medical documentation for temporary disability
accommodations by contacting the Student Ability Success Center
<https://newscenter.sdsu.edu/student_affairs/sds/> by emailing
sascinfo at sdsu.edu. After an expedited review of the student’s medical
documentation SASC will provide an accommodation letter for students to
share with their instructors in order to work out the best accommodations
for their courses. Students will not be penalized in any way if they
request academic accommodations.

If you have any questions and concerns please do not hesitate to contact me
or Theresa Garcia.

Best regards

Yusuf
