Matthew

Chris Paolini teaches COMPE 160 which is a first year programming class.
He is also a very cooperative and knowledgeable individual. His class was
among the classes with high achievement gap (for no explainable reason).
Perhaps you can approach him as well. I can generate you data both
before and after some interventions to show success (or not).

Good luck

yusuf

Community for Fall 2020

Dear SDSU Engineering Faculty,

This past semester, the Center for Teaching and Learning and the SDSU
Division of Diversity and Innovation sponsored a Teaching for Equity
Learning Community that was led by Prof. Daniel Reinholz. This community
focused on the thoughtful use of data to inform improvements to instruction
practices. Faculty participants had their lectures recorded and coded using
the EQUIP tool <http://equip.ninja/>, to collect data on the participation
of students from diverse backgrounds. Participants also learned about
teaching strategies that help foster an environment with more equitable
participation.

A small group of engineering faculty is now looking to form a similar
learning community for the Fall 2020 semester, and recruiting faculty who
are interested in participating. This group will have support from Prof.
Daniel Reinholz and from a student assistant who will help code recorded
lectures using the EQUIP tool to analyze data on student participation. The
group will meet virtually 1 - 2 times per month to analyze data from class
recordings, debrief about effective teaching practices, and discuss
specific strategies and approaches to improve equitable student
participation. *If you are teaching a class in Fall 2020 that will have
synchronous virtual meetings with at least 15 students and you would like
to participate in this effort or learn more about it, please contact
Matthew Verbyla (mverbyla at sdsu.edu <mverbyla at sdsu.edu>).*
