Dear Institution President, Provost, or Chancellor:
I am pleased to inform you that the National Academies of Sciences,
Engineering, and Medicine, on behalf of the U.S. Department of State and
the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), will be accepting
applications for the 2021 cohort of Jefferson Science Fellows (JSF). Your
institution holds, or has held, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for
participation in this program.
The JSF program at the U.S. Department of State and USAID was established
by the Secretary of State in 2003 and serves as an innovative model for
engaging the American academic science, technology, engineering, and
medical communities in U.S. foreign policy and international development.
Since inception, approximately 150 Fellows have served at the U.S.
Department of State or USAID, and we are anticipating an opportunity for up
to 15 new Fellows to be selected for the 2021-2022 academic year.
The JSF program is open to tenured, or similarly ranked, faculty from U.S.
institutions of higher learning who are U.S. citizens. Fellows spend one
year on assignment at the U.S. Department of State or USAID serving as
advisers on issues of foreign policy or international development.
Assignments are tailored to the needs of the hosting office, while taking
into account the Fellows’ interests and areas of expertise. Following the
fellowship year, Fellows will return to their academic career but remain
available to the U.S. government as experienced consultants for short-term
projects.
The application period will open on August 3 and will close in mid-October.
Qualified faculty may apply, with support from their institution as
indicated in an MOU with the National Academy of Sciences and may also be
nominated by their institution. I hope you will consider this as an
opportunity for one or more of your faculty and encourage or support their
application or nomination.
Attached you will find the current brochure of the program which we
encourage you to share with faculty. Additional details on the JSF program
can be found on our website at www.nas.edu/jsf.
Best regards,
*H. Ray Gamble, PhD*
