Hi Everyone,

Keck will be accepting concept reviews from now to February 15,
2019. Please forward this information to those you believe would be
interested (Chairs, Directors, Deans, etc.). All concept papers need to be
submitted to me by *Monday, January 27, 2020*. You can find the detailed
instructions for constructing your single-paged concept papers here

All concepts will be reviewed by an internal committee prior to the concept
calls to ensure guidelines are met. (Not every concept will move forward.
Please note that this is opportunity is open across campus).

There are two areas that Keck accepts applications: Medical research and
Science and Engineering research. Please identify which research grant area
you are applying for when submitting your concept paper.

*Some key points to note for Research grants*:

1. They do not fund “Centers” virtual or physical. They fund new ideas and
new ways of investigating.

2. Keck wants unique, different and new. They are looking for something
they haven’t heard of before. They need the “wow” factor. “Oh, we never
thought about that.”

3. Keck wants to fund incredibly important research that can only be done
by that one team.

4. Keck wants to fund projects no one else can fund because they are too
risky. They will not fund anything that is fundable by NIH/NSF or other
government organizations.

5. Keck will not fund clinical or therapeutic activities.

6. They do not fund disease-specific research or drug development projects.
Research needs to pertain to all biomed science.

7. Emphasize breakthrough potential. Provide substantial evidence.

8. The project needs to blend experiment and theory, this is important.

*Other Feedback:*

Their reviewers are all PhDs/experts in their fields, from Chemistry,
Neuroscience, Biology, etc. They go to all the scientific conferences and
are up to speed in their areas. They are familiar with “why” the science is
important, so more emphasis needs to be made on “how” we will take an
innovative approach.

*Note:* Look at recent funded abstracts their website,
http://www.wmkeck.org/impact. These are things that will *NOT* be funded
again. Our concepts need to be different.
