College of Engineering Faculty and Staff,

In early April, a notification was sent regarding a Planning, Design, and
Construction project to *permanently isolate the Engineering, EIS, and GMCS
Buildings from the campus steam heat loop and replace steam heating for
these buildings with a hot water boiler plant* which will be installed on
the roof of the Engineering Building.

This email is to follow up that general email notice (attached below)
with *more
detailed project information. *

*BACKGROUND:*

The project is known as the "HHW" or *"Heating Hot Water" Project* because
the hot water we will be supplying will be used for heating in the
mechanical (HVAC) system.

Your buildings (and the GMCS Building) are "Phase 1" of a multi-phase,
multi-year project, and all work for the Phase 1 Buildings (Engineering,
EIS, and GMCS) will complete this summer.

I'm sure everyone remembers our work this spring to install underground
piping in the courtyard between Engineering/EIS, on Aztec Circle Drive, and
in the GMCS landscape planter to create a loop between the three buildings.
This underground work is complete.

*UPCOMING ACTIVITIES:*

This summer, we are abandoning and demolishing steam system piping inside
the buildings and installing hot water piping in its place. We will then
crane-lift a premanufactured boiler plant to the Engineering Building roof
to complete the new hot water loop system for Phase 1.

*Next week (May 4 - 8), we will finish work to permanently take the Phase 1
buildings (Engineering, GMCS, and EIS) off of the campus steam heat loop. *

*From next week (May 4) until the end of July, Engineering and EIS will not
have steam heat or boiler heat.* The gap in heat service is because the
steam heat piping must be removed first, so that we can then install the
new hot water piping in its place.

*IMPACTS:*

When/if you are in the Engineering or EIS buildings this summer, *you may
notice cooler than normal temperatures*.
If needed, Facilities Services can adjust set points and recirculation air
to mitigate loss of heat.

Please *contact me right away if you think that loss of steam heat between
now and the end of July will affect your research*.
Please also feel free to *contact me this summer if your area feels too
cool; or if you have questions or would just like more information about
the project.*

*As we proceed with project work, further notices will follow for other
expected impacts. *

Thank you all,

Kara

April 1, 2020 Notification:

Long Term Steam Interruption Notice at Various Locations
*Long Term Steam Interruption Notice at Various Locations*

*To: *Engineering, Engineering & Interdisciplinary Sciences and Geology
Mathematics Computer Science Building Occupants

*From:* Kimberly Carnot
            Director of Facilities Services

Please be advised that Planning, Design & Construction will be continuing a
facility project that may impact your area. Below are the details of the
scope of work and anticipated impacts:

*Scope of Work:* Steam will be shutoff to the buildings for demolition of
steam piping system.

*Reason for Project:* The campus steam heat system will be replaced with
localized hot water boiler plants. Steam piping must be removed before the
new hot water system piping can be installed in the same locations.

*Anticipated Impacts: *There will be periods of elevated noise levels
throughout the project. Occupants may experience cooler than normal room
temperatures. If needed, Facilities Services staff will raise set points
and recirculation air levels to send warmer air to buildings to mitigate
loss of heat.

*Start Date: *Monday, April 6, 2020
*End Date: *Wednesday, August 19, 2020
*Work Hours:* 6:00 AM - 4:00 PM

*Contact: *Please direct any questions or concerns to Kara Peterson,
Construction Program Manager, Planning, Design & Construction at (619)
459-7477 or kara.peterson at sdsu.edu. For questions about health and
safety measures, please contact Gillian Marks, Senior Director of
Environmental Health & Safety at (619) 594-2853 or gmarks at sdsu.edu.
