Dear Colleagues,
I would like to provide you with an update regarding the Engineering
Faculty, Staff, and Student access to the SDSU Engineering Spaces:
1. The decisions regarding the designation of essential
personnel were made according to the criteria specified below, through my
consultation with the Provost and the Vice President for Research.
President de la Torre made the final approval of the list of essential
personnel.
The following are the general criteria used across the SDSU campus for
essential personnel designation:
- Responsible for maintaining the viability of research subjects,
including the well-being of animals in vivarium and non-vivarium facilities.
- Research personnel who are needed to preserve highly perishable, and
difficult to replace research materials (e.g. primary cell lines that
cannot be stored), such that considerable time and costs would be
associated with their loss.
- Individuals who are responsible for regular maintenance of equipment
that, if not done, could result in damage to the equipment and/or
extraordinary cost.
- Researchers working on experiments that have a small window for
completion — for example, data collection might be required in the
immediate time-frame as a long-term experiment comes to fruition or for
research that relies on the ability to make specific measurements only at
certain times a year.
- Research critical to helping address the COVID-19 health crisis.
- Research where a pause in the research will negatively impact the
care of participants on a clinical trial.
2. Most people designated essential researchers are expected
to access their buildings for a limited number of hours per week. Very few
people have been granted full time access.
3. *The primary reason to restrict access is to ensure social
distancing and to prevent the spread of disease. Other factors are
important, however, and include personal safety and limited availability of
cleaning supplies and custodial staff.*
4. *Several campus buildings will be closed, with access only
granted for emergency purposes. Other buildings will be locked and
accessible by keycard or key only to those designated as essential
personnel.* *Building closures and restricted access to academic buildings
will begin on Wednesday, April 8. College of Engineering affiliates without
essential access should retrieve items before then.*
5.* There will be a process to request temporary access.* In
emergency situations, a faculty or staff member requiring immediate access
should contact Campus Police. In urgent but non-emergency situations, a
faculty or staff member should contact his or her Dean or Dean’s designee,
who will contact Campus Police on his or her behalf. In non-emergency
situations, a form will be available which will require the Dean’s
approval, with temporary access granted within 24 hours.
Best regards,
Eugene
